Online Games For Free: The History

free online games

The development of online games is inseparable from the development of computer technology and computer networks. The explosion of online gaming is a reflection of rapid computer network which was formerly in a small-scale (small local network) up to the internet and continues to grow until now. At its first appearance in 1960, computer can only be used for 2 people to play games. Then came the computer with time-sharing ability so players who play the game is not limited in number and do not have to be in the same room (multiplayer games). You can play most of these online games for free.

Then in 1970 when the emerging packet-based computer network, computer networks are not only limited to the LAN (Local Area Network) only, but already includes WAN (Wide Area Network) and the Internet. Online games which appeared first is the war simulation games or an aircraft used for military purposes, these games which later inspired the emerging and developing of other games. The year of 2001 is also regarded as an important period in the resurrection of online games for free. At the time, dotcom fever reaches its peak. This helps in the development of the dissemination of information about online games.

A massively multiplayer online game (also called as MMO and MMOG) is a multiplayer video game technology which allows a game to be played simultaneously (unlimited number of players). There are several types of MMOG such as first-person shooter, role-playing, bulletin board role-playing games, real-time strategy, turn-based strategy, and simulations. I can say that the most popular online games for free is MMOFPS (massively multiplayer online game first-person shooter). MMOFPS is an online gaming genre which features a persistent world and a large number of simultaneous players in a first-person shooter fashion.

With the growing age, online games for free played on the internet are not limited to use with computers only. The newer game consoles such as the PSP, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS and Wii are also accessible through the internet. In addition mobile devices and smartphones based on such operating systems as Android, iOS and Windows Phone are seeing an increase in the number of MMO games available.
