St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will give a dream home valued at an estimated $400,000 to a lucky ticket holder Sunday. The tickets cost $100, and will be available Tuesday through Friday this week.

Only 10,000 tickets will be sold, and 20 other prizes valued at $500 each will also be distributed. The winner of the house will have the option of accepting $200,000 in pre-tax cash instead.

Tickets can be reserved at Kern Schools Federal Credit Union, Urner's, Roger's Jewelry Co. and the St. Jude Dream Home Open Houses through Friday.

The house is at 14206 Santa Fe Court, Bakersfield, 93314.

The Borax Visitor Center Foundation announced it will award 15 grants totaling $27,000 to businesses around Boron. The awards range from $500 to $4,000. Recipients include East Kern Sports Association ($1,400), West Boron Elementary School ($4,000) and the Wind in the Willows Educational Organization ($2,000), among others.

Grant funding was made possible from gate fees and gift store revenues from the Borax Visitor Center, as well as donations from employees of Rio Tinto Minerals. The Borax Visitor Center Foundation has awarded $170,000 to non-profit organizations since its inception in 2000.

The Kern County Probation Department will celebrate the groundbreaking of what is to become a new mess hall on Wednesday, June 15. The new building, to be called the Camp Erwin Owen Mess Hall, has been in the works since 1984, when the Kern County Grand Jury first recognized the need for new facilities.

The new hall will feature 5,600 square feet of dining and cooking area. It will also give minors the opportunity to learn culinary skills with trained personnel.

Three graduating high school students will receive a total of $3,000 in scholarships from the Assistance League of Bakersfield. The scholarships are funded by the Assistance League Dean and Adah Gay Scholarship Fund.

Scholarships are given based on academic achievement, leadership, financial need and community service.

The recipients are Alejandro Medina of McFarland High School, Kim Phan from Independence High School, and Michelle Huete Sardaryzadeh of Golden Valley High School.

The scholarship program is one of five philanthropic programs Assistance League provides in the community.
