University of Fiji to operate under own laws soon

THE University of Fiji will soon begin operating under its own independent legislation, the University of Fiji Decree, once promulgated, according to Pandit Bhuwan Dutt, president of the Arya Pratindhi Sabha of Fiji.

Mr Dutt made the revelation yesterday during his opening address at the Sabha's 2011 convention at Nakasi's Bhawani Dayal Arya College.

The pandit said the university operated under Shiksha Fiji Limited, which is a company registered under the Companies Act.

"Once promulgated, UniFiji will operate under the provisions of this new decree and Shiksha Fiji Limited will have to be voluntarily wound up," Mr Dutt said.

Mr Dutt added it is a requirement under Fiji's education system that the university should operate under its own legislation.

"We have been working on a draft decree with Government for several months and I am extremely pleased to report that on Tuesday June 7, 2011, Cabinet approved the University of Fiji Decree," he said.

Mr Dutt acknowledged the government's help in the facilitation of the exercise. Around 340 students have graduated from the university since it began operations seven years ago in Lautoka.
