JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) -- The Joplin Humane Society has been overflowing with cats and dogs since the tornado that tore through the southwest Missouri city last month.

It now has about 900 animals calling the shelter home -- three times its usual inventory.

Many pets were separated from the owners in the May 22 tornado that left almost one-third of the city's nearly 50,000 residents homeless.

Executive director Karen Aquino worries that despite every effort, many may never be reunited with their owners.

So the organization plans an "Adopt-a-thon" the weekend of June 25-26.? Any animals that haven't been claimed by that point will be spayed and neutered and given away free to good homes.

Aquino promises that no pets made homeless by the tornado will be euthanized.

The public outpour of support for the Joplin, Missouri tornado victims is ongoing as hardship continues.

Even when owners are reunited with their lost pets, some are?still being forced to part with?them permanently?because they no longer have houses and must relocate into housing where they are unable to keep pets.

Every ounce of assistance you can provide?is greatly appreciated by the people still recovering from this natural disaster.
