Reasons Why You Should Promote Your Online Business Through Forums ...

Internet marketing is the only way to get a big exposure for your blogs and websites. With the many tools you can use or apply which includes SEO, directory submission, article directories and many more, there is only one marketing strategy that can give you immediate traffic instantly and that is through Forum marketing.

Forum marketing is fun and learning experience for you as a marketer. Why? Because forums are informational in nature. You interact with other people that has the same interest as you, sharing thoughts and ideas for the betterment of yourselves. This is the reason why forums are widely important for Internet marketing, you can apply your knowledge, gain some knowledge and at the same time market your website and blogs.

How will you market your business in forums? For those who are beginners and just starting their online business endeavors, you must first learn how to market your site through organic means such as forum marketing before you can plunge to a more complex search engine optimization. To get started, below are some tips on how you can promote your business through forums.

- First off, search for the best forum that has the same niche as yours. You may join different forums with different topics but I suggest that you only join forums that are of interest to you so that you can interact and communicate properly. Once you find the right forum for you, you have to register to become a member.

- After registration, you have to go to your user control panel to edit your profile. You can change your avatar (forum picture), contact information and most significantly your signature. Signature will be your bread and butter when it comes to forum marketing. Please note that some forums requires a number of posts before you can add a signature.

- After you edit your profile, go to the forum?s home page and find ?introduction? or ?introduce yourself? section. Here, you must introduce yourself to the community to let them know that a new member has arrived. A few members will welcome you for sure.

- Never advertise your business right away. This is the reason why most Internet marketers fail in forum marketing. You just cannot advertise your business website in any section of the forum. Why? Because it?s against their terms of service and you will be flagged as spammer. However, if there is a section that specifically for business advertising, then you can link drop your website business with no problem at all.

- Never bump or hi-jack an existing thread. Thread bumping is against forum rules and you must avoid doing it. If you started a post, let it naturally get replies from other members and don?t intentionally self-reply your own thread to make it on the top of the thread section again. Meanwhile, hi-jacking a thread has similar penalties. Don?t ever start another conversation in an existing topic. The thread starter may become irritated and can deduct you with some forum penalties. It is much better if you start your own thread than hi-jacking other members post.

- Interact to as many threads as possible. Why do you have to do this? The reason is exposure. The more posts you make, the more popular you become. Once people get to notice you, your signature links will also be noticed and you will get more traffic to your sites.

That?s it. You may join as many forum sites as you like but make sure that you participate to all of them at least once a day. This is to make sure that you won?t be tagged as a spammer and to get more traffic from your forum marketing efforts.

Oliver Platt treats cancer with humor on 'Big C' (AP)

NEW YORK ? For much of last season on Showtime's "The Big C," Oliver Platt played a husband with no clue his wife had been diagnosed with life-threatening cancer.

It was hard playing those scenes "in the dark," he says. "You had to really focus and forget that you knew." But how? "Well, you just do it. It's your job. You pretend."

Platt is pretty good at that.

But as his dark though ultimately life-affirming comedy returns for a second season (Monday at 10:30 p.m. EDT), Paul is fully informed about the grave condition of his mate, Cathy (played by series star Laura Linney). And while the needy, freewheeling nature Paul displayed before was a burden on Cathy (she even threw him out of the house for a time when the show began), now he's trying to grow up and support her in her fight against this illness.

As a dutiful husband, he even scores some marijuana from his bygone dealer to help ease Cathy's discomfort.

"I cannot believe that the guy I used to call 20 years ago still has the same pager number," Paul crows ? "and that I remembered that it was listed under `Bicycle Parts' in my address book."

Soon, he and Cathy are home, lighting up and getting baked.

For nearly a quarter-century, the 51-year-old Platt has flourished as a character actor who brings a lovable roguery, and insight as well, to his roles. Moon-faced and bulky at 6 feet, 3 inches, his performances range from the shrewd White House counsel challenging President Bartlet on "The West Wing" to Manhattan rapscallion Nathan Detroit in the 2009 Broadway revival of "Guys and Dolls"; from the druggy, kinky lawyer in the TV series "Huff" to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner in the miniseries "The Bronx Is Burning." Currently, he's appearing as The Man in Black, a CIA team leader, in the sci-fi hit "X-Men: First Class."

Platt cites his distinctly non-leading-man looks as an asset.

"What I was told early on was that, as an actor, I had a uniqueness: There wasn't anybody who looked like me, for better or worse, and we don't need to get into THAT any further, thank you," he says, chuckling.

The son of a career diplomat, he grew up in Washington and throughout the Far East as the family was frequently re-stationed. His interest in drama was a response to often being on the move.

"I was always a new kid in school and I figured out this was a way to plug in: I'd try out for a play and then I would have a group of friends," he says. But it was more than a coping device. "I also loved doing it."

Bitten by the bug, he majored in drama at Boston's Tufts University, then spent several years in the local theater scene before embarking for the big time in New York. He landed his feature film debut in the 1988 hit comedy "Married to the Mob."

The career he has enjoyed since then has been busy and eclectic.

"I'm drawn to stuff that I haven't done before," he says. "But at the same time, when you take a job, especially a high-profile job, you want to have a sense that you're not going to completely wipe out. So you try and balance things."

As an example of how things can go askew, he mentions "Guys and Dolls."

"I should have had more respect for the material," he says. "I thought, `I did this in high school. This is going to be great!' And it was a very humbling experience. It was really, really hard." (The Associated Press' late drama critic, Michael Kuchwara, called Platt's depiction of Nathan "cautious rather than comic.")

"But I got deeply attached to that experience," Platt says, "and loved it, in ways that I could never have anticipated."

Platt married in 1992, and he and wife Camilla have three kids ages 16, 14 and 12.

"I don't take it for granted that I'll be offered work," he says. "There's a sense of gratitude that I'm able to support my family doing this."

They live in Greenwich Village, near the breakfast spot where Platt has joined a reporter one recent morning. Chained outside is his bike, which is a no-frills affair, oversized with a 70-cm frame and sporting a plastic dairy-crate basket lashed to the front wheel. After the interview, Platt will pedal off to do chores.

Through the years, he's been able to balance his personal life and career, never venturing too far from home for too long ("The Big C" is shot within commuting distance in Connecticut).

"Family life to me is incredibly important and fulfilling, and it keeps the noise of show biz in perspective for me," he says, adding, "My wife is very grounded, unimpressed by the superficial trappings of show biz.

"When I was younger, I had to do a bit of disentangling myself from the acting world. When I got on stage, it became a little too important for me. I needed to turn acting back into a job, instead of a survival mechanism."

But don't get the idea that Platt considers acting just a job. In his mind, it's a process of discovery for all concerned.

"The camera is such an incredibly accurate instrument that it sees way beyond what you're trying to project," he says, "and if you're lucky enough to keep acting, the audience is going to develop a sense of you that you aren't even aware of."

That's all part of the plan.

"What I do is far ? far! ? from the most important thing in the world," he says. "But it's important to me, and I've never had any doubt that I was doing what I was meant to do."

Breaking the Code on Buzzwords ? Failing Schools

Money helps campaigns succeed and so do strong messages, especially when the messages are adopted and promoted by large sectors of the public.? Consider? sound bites such as the following: ?Take back America?, ?Yes we can?, ?Drill, baby drill??all uttered by public figures with publicly stated agendas. Like them or not, the above statements are clearly presented for approval? to debate or to support. However, there are more insidious campaigns taking place through coded messages, many of them sponsored by people with big money and big agendas.? People aren?t really aware that a campaign is occurring because the money goes quietly into multiple sources, spreading the message through media and through apparently well-meaning ?grassroots? movements, often preying on sincerely good-intentioned people. Such messages start to emerge in a seemingly spontaneous manner, like a pop song that?s played everywhere you go.? Often we don?t even pay close attention because it seems agreeable and harmless enough.?

Then, much like the inane pop song, maybe it gets stuck in our heads. After a while of this constant exposure, we?ve got many sectors of the population accepting new definitions of things like appropriate retirement age (see link above), or altered notions on civil liberties.? That?s the magic of coded propaganda.? Here are some of the code words and concepts being used to wage assault on public education.

Accountability? This seemingly inoffensive word has become code for an increased emphasis on scrutiny of teachers ?performance? & ?effectiveness? (two more code words).? I have used the word myself but no longer use it reflexively, and am clear of what I mean when I say it now.? I?m slightly embarrassed to admit that in the past I used it to soften my questions about what we were expected to do, as in, ?I agree that we need to be accountable, but is this a valid measure for a five-year-old??.? The bad part of the frequency of this word (and most of the others) is that we have no consensus on its meaning. ?Accountability? has become (among other things) code for the need for high-stakes tests, handily diverting proper debate on merit of the tests. (It?s also used as code for promoting current Department of Education policy.)

Achievement Now when we talk about student achievement, it is almost impossible to separate the concept from the ever-present invisible cloak of standardized test scores.? Unfortunately the tests aren?t really helping kids learn valuable skills. Also, the so-called achievement gap stubbornly persists pretty much along economic lines and the shameful truth is that among non-white children the percentages of children living in poverty are larger.? Higher income in a child?s household tends to be linked to overall opportunities that generally lead to higher academic achievement.? While I agree that we need to address the ?achievement gap? (another code phrase), I urge people to critically examine use of the phrase. ? It is often used in a cynical fashion, to reference children of color implying concern on their behalf without genuinely interacting with and understanding the deeper issues that affect them.

Teacher Effectiveness What does this phrase mean to you?? Colorado does not yet have an official definition for this loaded term, yet we do have a Senate Bill wherein we can be terminated for lack of ?effectiveness?.? As a mother, and as a teacher, I am more inclined to define it as the ability and desire to inspire children to be curious and enthusiastic and active about the learning process.? In my definition, I also include the sincere willingness to work with children of diverse learning styles, backgrounds, abilities and needs and to address these individual differences in a meaningful way.? I could go on at length about what exactly I mean, but it isn?t relevant here.? More relevant is the fact that this is another phrase lacking clear definition, yet it is being used to prompt discussions about teacher pay and patterns of hiring and firing. This leads to the last phrase for today, which Sabrina attacked last week.? However, it will take more than one attack to break this one down.

Status Quo? This is one of the trickiest phrases of all and it seems to have had plenty of time to take root in our national consciousness.? The problem is, when politicians and pundits use it, it tends to be anti-teacher and an automatic backhand to teachers unions as well as to anyone who might question whether the methods we have in place are actually helping our students. While I will not link them here I will say that you can find plenty of hits illustrating my point if you launch an internet search linking this phrase to assorted talking heads.? Yeah, status quo.? Are we also talking about the status quo that diverts money from students and classrooms to pay for standardized testing?? How about the one that waits to officially determine it?s a ?crisis? before intervening?? The one that shuffles the least experienced teachers and leaders into the highest need neighborhoods without adequate resources?? Anybody?

I call upon our readers to engage in further code-cracking by listening, questioning and speaking up. As functioning members of a democratic society, we need to think critically and engage in debate rather than just accepting the rhetoric.? I also hope to see many of you at the SOS March on July 31st.

Social.com Reportedly Sold For $2.6 Million. Who?s The Buyer?

This was the topic du jour on some domain name industry blogs yesterday, but I haven't seen much coverage beyond that. According to DN Journal, a contract for the sale of the domain name Social.com has been signed by both the seller (an individual named Scott Carter) and the buyer (undisclosed for the time being). You may remember that the domain was to be auctioned off on at DOMAINfest Barcelona with an opening bid of $5 million. The high reserve wasn't met before the auction ended, but a bid for $2.5 million did come in at one point.

India, Pakistan hold peace talks (AFP)

ISLAMABAD (AFP) ? India and Pakistan held talks on peace and security issues in Islamabad on Thursday, part of efforts to stabilise South Asia as the United States prepares to draw down troops from Afghanistan.

Concerns over terrorism are likely to dominate India's agenda since US troops killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan and since a four-year peace process collapsed when Islamist gunmen killed 166 people in Mumbai in November 2008.

India blamed the attack on Pakistani militants from the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba group and Islamabad acknowledged that the plot was hatched at least partly on its soil.

Ending a more than two-year freeze, the two countries announced peace talks would resume after a meeting in February between Pakistani foreign secretary Salman Bashir and his Indian counterpart Nirupama Rao.

Rao said she had come "with an open mind and a constructive spirit" to work towards building "trust and confidence" that would eventually lead to a normalisation of relations between the nuclear-armed rivals.

Both sides say talks will focus on the fate of the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir, peace and security and confidence building, in preparation for a scheduled visit by Pakistan's foreign minister to India next month.

"We expect that the talks will be positive and forward looking," Pakistani foreign ministry spokeswoman Tehmina Janjua told AFP. A senior Pakistani ministry official told AFP the talks started around 3:30 pm (1130 GMT).

No breakthroughs are expected, but the contacts are considered a key element of efforts to stabilise the region after US President Barack Obama announced the start of US troop withdrawals from Afghanistan.

The international community has been pushing the two sides to get back to the negotiating table to help ease tensions in an already volatile region.

"We have to be patient, realistic and positive," Indian Foreign Minister S.M. Krishna said this week, calling for terrorism to be dealt with "firmly and transparently".

New Delhi has long accused its neighbour of harbouring militant groups, but analysts say it is becoming increasingly concerned that growing unrest in Pakistan could compromise the safety of the country's nuclear arsenal.

Relations between India and Pakistan, which have fought three wars since the subcontinent was partitioned in 1947, have been plagued by border and resource disputes, and accusations of Pakistani militant activity against India.

Two of the three wars were over Kashmir, where militants have been fighting New Delhi's rule for two decades in an insurgency that has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

After the Mumbai carnage, Delhi and Islamabad began to explore a resumption of structured talks last year, and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani met in Thimphu in April 2010.

Talks on the disputed Himalayan glacier of Siachen, where troops have clashed intermittently since 1984, concluded a month ago without progress.

"There will be no major breakthrough in the talks but I am sure that the process will now go on to enable the two countries to discuss and sort out issues," Pakistani foreign policy analyst A.H.Nayyar told AFP.

North, south Sudan agree to demilitarize Abyei (AP)

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia ? Leaders from north and south Sudan signed an agreement on Monday to demilitarize the disputed central region of Abyei and allow an Ethiopian peacekeeping force to move in, said a former South African president who is helping lead peace talks.

Thabo Mbeki said Monday's agreement provides for the full demilitarization of Abyei, a fertile land near major oil fields that both north and south claim as their own. Troops from northern Sudan moved into the region last month, action that sent tens of thousands of people who are aligned with the south fleeing.

"The Sudan Armed Forces will pull out and will be deployed outside Abyei," said Mbeki, who helped lead the talks in neighboring Ethiopia.

The agreement comes three weeks before the south is set to secede from the north and create the world's newest country. Heavy violence has broken out along the north-south border in the run-up to the south's independence declaration.

An Ethiopian peacekeeping force that is ready to deploy will move in to Abyei as soon as possible, Mbeki said. The U.N. Security Council will decide at a meeting in New York what the mandate and size of the Ethiopian force will be.

Shortly after the agreement was reached, Mbeki told the U.N. Security Council by video conference that both parties want the U.N. to move quickly to see the agreement implemented. Mbeki said urgent action would allow the displaced people of Abyei to return after military forces leave, allowing the humanitarian situation to be addressed.

Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations welcomed the agreement and told the council that the United States "will soon" circulate a draft resolution that would authorize creation of the force for Abyei.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, in Washington, called the agreement "a very important first step," adding "we urge the parties to move quickly now to implement it and translate it into immediate concrete improvements in the security and humanitarian situation on the ground."

The text of the agreement says the Ethiopian forces will deploy "as soon as authorized by the United Nations." One brigade ? typically around 4,000 troops ? is to be deployed.

"It will also bring to an end this threat of violence, and actual violence in the area, so we are really hoping that (the) Security Council will look at this agreement as early as possible and take all the necessary decisions so that the various provisions in the agreement can be implemented," Mbeki said.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed the agreement Monday and called on the parties to abide by its provisions, "to demilitarize the area and establish an administration and police service," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

The parties must also provide full cooperation to the United Nations and government of Ethiopia in deploying peacekeeping troops and police to the area," he said.

Nesirky said the secretary-general pledged the full support of the U.N. in facilitating the implementation of the agreement and called on both parties to cease hostilities in Southern Kordofan.

Tens of thousands of people fled Abyei after northern troops moved in last month. More recently, tens of thousands of people aligned with the south have also fled attacks by the northern military in the state of South Kordofan. Talks on the violence in that region are set to begin Tuesday, Mbeki said.

Rice, the American ambassador, said U.S. reports of ongoing fighting in South Kordofan were "horrifying both because of the scope of human rights abuses and because of the ethnic dimensions to the conflict."

She said Sudanese Armed Forces have shelled and bombed the areas around the capital, Kadugli, and the U.S. has received reports that forces aligned with the government "searched for southern forces and sympathizers, whom they arrested and allegedly executed." The U.S. also has received unconfirmed reports that the Sudanese military is "arming elements of the local population and placing mines in areas of Kadugli," she said.

"The government of Sudan can prevent this crisis from escalating further by immediately stopping its military efforts to disarm the Sudan People's Liberation Army in Southern Kordofan and by focusing on diplomatic efforts to peacefully resolve the conflict," Rice said.

North and south Sudan fought a civil war that lasted decades and killed some 2 million people. It ended with a 2005 peace deal that gave the south the right to hold a self-determination vote. The region voted overwhelmingly in January to secede, but the north and south have yet to work out details like demarcation of the border and sharing of oil wealth.

Pagan Amam, the leader of the southern delegation, said the south is happy with the agreement, particularly the part calling for the withdrawal of northern forces from Abyei.

"This will create an environment for negotiations and to finalize the final status of Abyei and resolve other outstanding issues," he said.

Amam said a line about Abyei being a land of different communities was removed from the agreement, because as the south sees it Abyei is the land of the Ngok Dinka, who are aligned with the south. The text of the agreement says ethnic Misseriya ? Arab cattle herders aligned with the north ? "shall enjoy rights of migration and access to pasture and water."

Sudan's U.N. Ambassador Daffa-Alla Elhag Ali Osman called the signing of the temporary arrangements for the Abyei area "excellent news."

"The government of Sudan is sincere in its determination to resolve all pending issues," he said. "This announcement leads us to believe that the pending issues will be resolved."

He cited the "good news" of progress on economic issues including resource sharing, said both sides are "very close to an agreement on security," and told the council the Sudanese government "is determined to arrive at agreement on South Kordofan and all other pending issues."

Mbeki reported to the Security Council that north-south discussions have also made headway on issues like trade, currency, debt and oil. He said the sides would look at a separate proposal on economic issues on Tuesday.

He said one outstanding matter is a discussion over the size and composition of an international military force that would assist the two Sudan states. The force would ensure border security, including policing a demilitarized border zone that the sides have already agreed to.

U.N. special envoy for Sudan, Haile Menkerios, told the Security Council by video conference that in addition to the Ethiopian force in Abyei, the North and South have agreed in principle on the need for a third party to monitor their border, and are continuing discussions on the possibility of establishing a border monitoring operation.

He said the African Union's High Implementation Council has suggested that border monitoring be done by a U.N. peacekeeping mission ? and that if there is such a mission it also incorporate the Abyei force.

The north and south also agreed on a temporary solution for the administration of Abyei. The Abyei Council will elect a chairman nominated by the government of Sudan. A joint committee with two members from both sides and another member nominated by African Union chair Jean Ping will supervise the administration, the police force and the security situation.

"This should result in restoring peace and open the way for the two parties to discuss the final status of Abyei," Mbeki said. "That is not possible until you have stabilized the security situation."

Article by Thomas Lloyd

What have information do you have about buying Puerto Vallarta land? Not much, but that?s OK, since it?s just like buying land anywhere else, right?Well, not quite. Besides some distinct differences in buying Mexico land in general, due to different laws and property ownership possibilities, there are also some distinct features in Puerto Vallarta?s real estate market, making it necessary for buyers to first collect some accurate and complete information about buying before jumping in.One excellent way to begin is through a Mexico real estate guide. These can be found in e-book format, sometimes as free downloads. One such e-book, the Top Mexico Real Estate Guide: Buying Safely, is a compilation of questions and answers from a variety of experts in real estate and related fields. One expert is a real estate broker with over 15 years of experience in the Puerto Vallarta area. This e-book comes in an easy to use question and answer format, and can be quickly navigated from two side menus, by chapter, question or by expert, to compare two experts? answers to the same question. It can be downloaded in a PDF format in about 2 minutes from the TOPMexicoRealEstate website. An Mexico real estate guide such as this one will lay out the basics for you to know what questions to ask, what information to obtain and what steps you will need to take to make sure you find a Puerto Vallarta property that will be transferred to your ownership, legally. One major point which the book covers is the creation of your real estate ?team? ? the key players in your real estate purchase, what they will do for, how they will (and won?t) ensure a safe purchase, and how you should select them. A point of emphasis is the importance of selecting the right agent. After (or even during) browsing through the information, and keeping it on hand for future reference, the next major step is to find the agent who will guide you through the process. An experienced, reliable agent knowledgeable of the market and area will also be able to help you select a lot for sale that will suit your needs. This is especially important in Puerto Vallarta; as mentioned above, certain market situations, such as a glut of condos on the market, have created a high supply and buyers market it this particular section. There are also a large variety of home options available, and can sometimes be found below market value.Your should be able to advise you if land is the most appropriate type of real estate for your needs, and if you determine that is, help you find the best price for an ideal lot.TOPMexicoRealEstate.com; Mexico?s Leading Network of Specialists for Finding and Purchasing Mexican Properties Safely

'Big Man' Clarence Clemons recalled in NJ haunt (AP)

ASBURY PARK, N.J. ? Scores of fans gathered Sunday at a legendary rock club to mourn the death and celebrate the life and music of saxophonist Clarence Clemons.

The Stone Pony in Asbury Park was the place where Clemons, Bruce Springsteen and other E Street band mates got their musical starts. It opened its doors to a crowd of about 150 people, many adorned in Springsteen T-shirts.

A makeshift vigil was created at the club late Saturday as word spread of Clemons' death from complications of a stroke he had suffered about a week earlier at his home in Singer Island, Fla. By Sunday afternoon, the stage was adorned with Clemons photos.

Fans were lining up to snap pictures and leave flowers to honor Clemons. He was known as the Big Man, a nod to his physical size, stage presence and booming sax notes.

Within hours of Clemons' death on Saturday night, fans slowly began stopping by the club, which was hosting an unrelated act catering to a younger crowd. Flowers, a candle and a handwritten sign saying "RIP Big Man" soon sprouted outside the building, and more items were added throughout the night and on Sunday.

Gary Mottola, who owns the Stone Pony, said Sunday that the E Street Band was "the soul of Asbury Park" and that Clemons was the soul of the band. Mottola said that when the city fell on hard times, it was the energy from the band's performances that kept it alive.

Fans who attended the gathering had similar views, fondly recalling the impact Springsteen and Clemons had on their lives.

"One of our first dates was a Bruce concert," said Cyndi Matts of Little Silver, recalling the night more than a quarter-century ago when she and her now-husband heard the band perform the song "Jungleland."

"When he had that solo and everyone put their hands up ? it still gives me chills," Matts said.

Clemons' raucous sax solos helped define the Jersey shore sound of the `70s and `80s, a genre that also included Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and occasionally, a young Jon Bon Jovi. He was a vital part of the E Street Band and loyally served for decades with Springsteen, whom he met in 1971 on the New Jersey bar band circuit.

Kyle Brendle, the house promoter at the Stone Pony, said Springsteen and Clemons played routinely at the club in the 1970s ? but usually as unannounced acts. He said the last time Clemons performed at the club was at a solo show in the summer of 2006.

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) -- The Joplin Humane Society has been overflowing with cats and dogs since the tornado that tore through the southwest Missouri city last month.

It now has about 900 animals calling the shelter home -- three times its usual inventory.

Many pets were separated from the owners in the May 22 tornado that left almost one-third of the city's nearly 50,000 residents homeless.

Executive director Karen Aquino worries that despite every effort, many may never be reunited with their owners.

So the organization plans an "Adopt-a-thon" the weekend of June 25-26.? Any animals that haven't been claimed by that point will be spayed and neutered and given away free to good homes.

Aquino promises that no pets made homeless by the tornado will be euthanized.

You can still find information about lost and found Joplin animals on Facebook?here?where a group of individuals have banded together to help in the efforts of reuniting pets and their owners.

The public outpour of support for the Joplin, Missouri tornado victims is ongoing as hardship continues.

Even when owners are reunited with their lost pets, some are?still being forced to part with?them permanently?because they no longer have houses and must relocate into housing where they are unable to keep pets.

Every ounce of assistance you can provide?is greatly appreciated by the people still recovering from this natural disaster.

Humana keeps adding local jobs as programs expand

By MICHAEL SASSO | The Tampa Tribune

Mass layoffs unfortunately are far more common these days than mass hiring sprees.

But insurance giant Humana is going against the grain. Every few months for two years, this Louisville, Ky.-based company has announced another round of hiring in the Tampa Bay area, putting on 140, 170, even 270 new employees at a time.

It quickly has become one of the Bay area's biggest employers and soon expects to have 2,200 employees here. Humana's Medicare insurance products and a new focus on curbing costs among the chronically ill are fueling its growth.

To be sure, many of the jobs at its East Tampa offices presumably are modestly-paid customer service jobs ? the company wouldn't reveal its average wage. That's a mixed bag for Hillsborough County, which is trying to create a higher-paying economy of financial services and biomedical firms.

Humana's big St. Petersburg operation does tend to have higher-skilled nurses and professionals.

Still, in a region dogged by 10.5-percent unemployment, many jobseekers appear to be jumping at Humana's openings. More than 2,000 people have applied for roughly 310 recently opened jobs between St. Petersburg and East Tampa.

Humana is hugely dependent on federal tax dollars. The company makes three-quarters of its money comes from federal sources, providing Medicare Advantage health plans to seniors, Medicaid plans for the poor and health coverage for the military, according to regulatory filings.

Medicare Advantage essentially is outsourced Medicare, where seniors give up their traditional government-run health coverage in favor of a private insurer.

Humana's Medicare division has been on a tear throughout Florida for several years. According to regulatory filings, about 379,000 Florida seniors were enrolled in Humana's Medicare Advantage plans at the end of last year, up 63 percent from 2004.

Meantime, the company has become one of the Bay area's most prolific hirers even during this anemic economy.

St. Petersburg has reaped some of the biggest job gains. In February 2009, Humana created a new division in the Carillon office complex called Humana Cares with an initial staff of 200 nurses, social workers and other professionals. At least four more rounds of hiring have brought Humana Cares to nearly 1,000 employees.

Humana Cares is still trying to fill some of the 177 jobs it announced in April, about 130 of whom work in Carillon.

Behind all that employment growth is a huge national trend: trying to cut healthcare costs at the outset.

Humana Cares' nurses, community health educators and dietitians regularly call people with diabetes, congestive heart failure and other chronic conditions. The hope is that if nurses regularly dial them up, they'll stick to their doctors' orders and stay out of the hospital.

Other health insurers also are getting more aggressive at this "care management."

They're using sophisticated models to pinpoint people with certain diseases and even those only at risk of developing them, said Tom Heatherington, a senior executive with the healthcare consulting division of Accenture.

Insurers can see a 3-to-1 return on their investment using such techniques, some evidence shows, Heatherington said.

But, care management is still experimental, he said. How do you prove that a nurse's call helped keep someone out of the emergency room?

"Overall, the jury is still out," Heatherington said. "It's a tricky thing because you're trying to show that things would've been worse."

Scott Latimer, Humana's market president for West Florida, said the nurses and social workers at Humana Cares are reducing hospital visits.

"The most expensive place to get medical care is in the hospital," Latimer said. "The least expensive is in the doctor's office."

In Tampa, Humana's growth has more to do with outsourced Medicare Advantage plans than preventive care.

Today, seniors in Florida alone account for about 17 percent of Humana's roughly $33 billion in nationwide premiums and fees, Securities and Exchange Commission filings show.

The company has an army of 1,100 telephone workers at the NetPark office complex on Hillsborough Avenue. There, agents in one call center answer customer questions, and agents in two more call centers try to sell them Medicare Advantage plans, prescription drug plans, vision, dental and long-term care insurance plans.

The company in early June said it's adding another 140 telephone sales agents at NetPark. Jobseekers can get more information about all Humana openings at .

Humana benefited hugely when Congress added a prescription drug benefit to Medicare in 2006, allowing Humana to create a new prescription drug plan, Latimer said.

Looking ahead, national healthcare reform will require Humana and other Medicare insurers to be more efficient.

In the past, the Medicare system has paid private insurers with Medicare Advantage plans about $1,000 more per patient than it pays for traditional Medicare. The federal Affordable Care Act will try to close that gap, which means cuts are looming for firms such as Humana, Latimer said.

Insurers also will get bonuses based on the quality of care they provide. Humana is counting on its telephone sales and customer service agents to help improve that efficiency and improve customer service, Latimer said.

Pierced 'goth' kittens: Animal cruelty? (The Week)

New York ? A Pennsylvania woman gives her cats painful, hardcore piercings ? then tries to sell them on eBay for $100 each

People who dress their pets up in cute clothes are often accused of inflicting mild animal cruelty on their pets. But a Pennsylvania woman has gone much, much further, adorning kittens with ear and neck piercings to turn them into marketable "gothic" felines. The woman, Holly Crawford, a 36-year-old dog groomer, has been convicted of animal cruelty, a decision that was upheld by the Superior Court of Pennsylvania earlier this week. Here, a brief guide:

What exactly did Crawford do to her cats?
She pierced the ears of three kittens, docked the tail of another, and tied a rubber band around the tail of a fifth kitten, apparently attempting to stem the blood flow so that the tail would eventually drop off. Pictures show a six-week-old kitten with its tiny ears pierced, and weighed down by heavy, 14-gauge barbell earrings. That kitten also had a ring piercing on its neck, and another barbell through the end of its cropped tail.

Why did Crawford do this?
She was attempting to sell the "gothic" kittens on eBay for $100 each. Crawford herself had "several facial piercings" and "was enthusiastic about piercing," according to the judge's opinion. In court, Crawford argued that the cat piercings were no different than accepted procedures like declawing cats or debarking dogs, and that the animal cruelty statutes were unclear on the matter of piercings.

How did the cats react?
According to the court ruling, Crawford said the kittens cried when she pierced them ? no surprise, especially given the 14-gauge needle, usually reserved thick-skinned cattle. Crawford also said one of the cats had ripped a piercing out.

How was Crawford caught?
In 2008, an undercover investigator with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals reported Crawford to authorities, after gaining entry to her home by posing as a potential goth kitten buyer.

What action have officials taken?
The kittens have been taken from Crawford, and a jury found her guilty of animal cruelty. She was sentenced to six months of house arrest and probation. Crawford appealed, and this week, the Superior Court of Pennsylvania affirmed the original decision. In the decision, Judge Kate Ford Elliott wrote that Crawford's claims "center on her premise that a person of normal intelligence would not know whether piercing a kitten's ears or banding its tail is maiming, mutilating, torturing or disfiguring an animal... We disagree."

And what about those poor cats?
Fear not, the kittens, who are nearly 3-years-old at this point, were all adopted.

A Sign of Things To Come? Canada Post Locks Out Workers, Union Calls Move Irresponsible

With the price of postage and package transport of the U.S. Postal Office increasing more and more, will we see the demise of our own Postal Service?

Will FedEx be the new postal service?

Canada Post Locks Out Workers, Union Calls Move Irresponsible

June 15, 2011

UPDATE: CTV News says it has learned that Labour Minister Lisa Raitt intends to push back-to-work legislation forward in an effort to end the ongoing postal strike. But Parliament will first deal with the Air Canada strike, before getting to the postal strike next week.?Read more here.

THE CANADIAN PRESS ? Don?t bother checking your mailbox this morning.

Canada Post has suspended urban mail operations across the country after 12 days of rotating strikes by its 48,000 unionized urban workers.

The Crown corporation says it was forced to declare the lockout late Tuesday night after the rotating work stoppages caused mail volumes and revenue to drop significantly.

?While we?d hoped to avoid a disruption to service to Canadians, we feel we can?t continue to let this drag on,? Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton told the Canadian Press.

?It?s having a huge impact on the business, it?s having a huge impact on our customers and our employees and the time is now to get a deal with the union.?

The post office estimated it lost $100 million after the largest rotating strikes took place Tuesday in Montreal and Toronto, where about 60 per cent of the country?s mail is handled.

It also said talks with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers were at an impasse, with the two sides ?far apart? on several key issues and no progress at the negotiating table for weeks.

?If we allow the uncertainty created by the rotating strikes to continue ? and we?ve seen customers walking away from Canada Post ? our ability to remain financially self-sufficient and not become a burden on taxpayers certainly is going to be in jeopardy,? said Hamilton.

Union representatives reacting to news of the lockout said Canada Post?s latest move was not entirely unexpected.

?I see it as a manoeuvre on the part of the corporation to try and get the government to legislate us back to work and legislate some type of unfavourable collective agreement on to us, as opposed to allowing the free and collective bargaining process to work itself out,? said Gerry Deveau, CUPW National Director for the Ontario region.

The federal government had appeared to rule out back-to-work legislation earlier this week, but the nationwide lockout could change that.

Canadians had already been feeling the effects of the labour dispute, not just from the rotating strikes, but because Canada Post had scaled back mail delivery in cities to Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays before declaring the lockout. The union had said the scaling back was an attempt by the corporation to provoke a general strike.

The current country-wide suspension of urban mail is likely to have a wider impact.

Although the labour dispute does not include rural postal workers, who fall under a different contract, even the post office has acknowledged that a prolonged lockout could mean they would eventually have no more mail to deliver.

?There will be nothing moving through this country,? said Deveau. ?If the government doesn?t intervene then I do see this potentially being a very long lockout.?

Both sides have said they expect to continue negotiating through Wednesday.

Deveau said negotiations had already been moving at a particularly slow place and the lockout would add an ?interesting turn? to talks. Pensions, workplace health and safety and sick leave benefits have been some of the key stumbling blocks, he said.

Meanwhile, Canada Post said it is still keen to reach a negotiated settlement.

?We certainly hope this is only a short-term measure,? said Hamilton.

?Unfortunately we have not been able to make much progress at the table and believe this is the best way to bring forward a timely resolution to the impasse.?

Canada Post?s union says the Crown corporation was irresponsible when it suspended urban mail operations across the country starting today.

The union has accused Canada Post of seeking to cause major disruptions in order to pressure the government into ordering workers back to work.

Canada?s Conservative government to criminalize postal strike

By Carl Bronski and Keith Jones
16 June 2011

Canada?s Conservative government is mounting a multi-pronged attack on the working class with the aim of bolstering big business? drive to slash wages, jobs, and benefits and breaking all resistance to the dismantling of vital public services.

Late Tuesday night, federal government-owned Canada Post imposed a nationwide lockout against 48,000 mail-sorters, letter-carriers, mail truck drivers, and postal station clerks. It sought to justify this provocation by claiming that an anemic campaign of localized 24-hour rotating walkouts mounted by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) since June 3 was costing the company tens of millions of dollars.

The Conservative government lost no time in using the lockout as a pretext to directly intervene in the dispute at Canada Post?a dispute that has been provoked by the post office?s demands for sweeping contract concessions, including a two-tier pay and benefit structure and a new hazardous and job-cutting work regime for letter carriers . On Tuesday afternoon, the government announced that before the day was out it would formally initiate the 48-hour process to introduce an emergency back-to-work law, illegalizing all job action by postal workers and suspending their collective bargaining rights.

[snip]

Speaking in Canada?s Parliament Wednesday, Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper defended the government?s attack on the postal and Air Canada workers, saying that the labor unrest was ?threatening to jeopardize economic recovery.? This is entirely in keeping with drive of the newly-elected Conservative majority government to place the full burden of the capitalist crisis on working people. In the name of fostering ?economic recovery,? the Conservatives have pledged to further slash corporate taxes, gut environmental and health and safety regulations, and balance the federal budget through a more than 10 percent cut in federal discretionary per capita spending and by hiking user fees for government services.

[snip]

If the union strategy has been to mount an ineffectual job action, it is because its overriding concern and that of the Canadian Labour Congress has been to avoid an all-out confrontation with the government of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper and this for two reasons. The union bureaucracy hopes to maintain its privileges, at the expense of rank-and-file workers, by accommodating itself to Canada?s new right wing majority government, just as the unions have integrated themselves ever more closely into management over the past quarter century. The unions fear that a challenge to the government and its big business agenda could precipitate a movement of the working class that would rapidly escape their control and threaten the entire social-political order. [Emphasis added]

More?..

WHO is this strike actually hurting? The workers or their Union?s ?power??

They should be grateful they HAVE A JOB??

We ALL have to make cuts/reductions in our lives to ?make do? today in this depressed economic era.

Why shouldn?t the Unions have to do this too?

Mass. Loses 4,000 Jobs; Unemployment Rate Down To 7.6 Percent

BOSTON ? There?s mixed news on the jobs front in Massachusetts.

According to state labor data released Thursday morning, the unemployment rate in Massachusetts fell to 7.6 percent in May ? down from 7.8 percent in April. State Labor Secretary Joanne Goldstein said it?s the state?s lowest unemployment rate since February 2009.
