Summer superhero movies season is in full swing. And so is the Fandom Five, the weekly rundown of the biggest stories of the week in geek movie/TV news....
1. Diverging of Directors Derail Development
Two high-falutin movie projects faced major setbacks this week when they both lost directors. David O. Russell parted ways with Columbia on Uncharted, the
adaptation of the video game, after he submitted a 200-page script with new
characters that totally diverged from the game. But the bigger loser here is
Warner Bros? Akira project, which lost helmer Albert Hughes. The project was
already facing major acting hurdles ? it couldn?t find its two leads even though Keanu Reeves was interested ? and the studio was dealing with racial sensitivity issues as it attempts to tackle one of the biggest Japanese properties of all time.
A lot of people want Akira to die but it won?t; the studio has sunk too much money into the project (including seven figures to Steve Kloves to do a big rewrite on it earlier this year).
2.? X-Men Movie Has Class
To the surprise of almost everyone, X-Men: First Class is sounding like it?s a good movie. Fox hasn't let any mainstream critics review the film yet, but word is leaking about how much the movie harkens back to the first two Bryan Singer-directed movies, how it?s got great character moments, and how great the 1960s settings look. No surprise, since Singer produced this one.
Yes, most of the raves are coming from the geek websites that tend to gush whenever a studio shows them a movie first. But Fox, also surprised by how great the buzz is, has been adding press screenings almost daily to get the message out.
3.? Star Wars Turns 34
And what did you do to celebrate?
I told a female friend who?s birthday it was that was she was old as Star Wars. She said it was the most depressing thing she?d heard all week. ?I do have a way with the ladies.
4.? You Have What?! 50 Hours?! On a Shelf?!
Speaking of Star Wars, George Lucas this week talked about the fabled live-action Star Wars TV show, saying, and I quote, ?We have 50 hours written.?
He also said the project is sitting on a shelf until he finds a more economical way to make it. ?Right now, it looks like the Star Wars features, but we have to figure out a way of making it for about a tenth the cost of the features, because it's television. And we're working toward that and we're continuing to work toward that and we will get there at some point,? he told G4?s Attack of the Show.
Someday.
5.? Shark Night 3D. Seriously?
Yes, I?m serious. While last year?s Piranha remake played up the blood and
boobs for laughs, the new trailer for Shark Night 3D plays the blood and
boobs straight. (Or on a curve, if you know what I mean.)
The movie?s got a low-wattage cast but is in the hands of David Ellis, a man who knows how to make scares fun (Final Destination 2 and Snakes on a Plane are some of his credits).
And if you watch the trailer and think, ?This is stupid. How are there sharks
in a lake?? Just remember, it?s a salt water later. See?
