2011 Ryerson Distinguished Lecture on IT - General Public events ...

Speaker: Dr. Wenwu Zhu, senior researcher, Microsoft Research Asia

Abstract:
Cloud computing is an emerging technology aiming to provide a variety of computing and storage services over the Internet. It generally incorporates Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Software as a Service (SaaS). With Web 2.0 & 3.0, Internet multimedia is emerging as services. To provide rich media services, multimedia computing has emerged as a noteworthy technology to generate, edit, process and search media contents, such as images, video, audio, graphics, etc.

In this talk I will introduce the principal concepts of multimedia cloud computing and present a novel framework. I will present multimedia cloud computing from Multimedia-aware Cloud (Media Cloud) and Cloud-aware Multimedia (Cloud Media) perspectives. More specifically, first, I will present Media Cloud, which addresses how cloud can perform distributed multimedia processing and storage, and provide Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning for multimedia services. Then, I will present Cloud Media, which addresses how multimedia services and applications can optimally utilize cloud computing resources to achieve better Quality of Experience (QoE). I will use eHealth Monitoring, Photosynth and Free Viewpoint Video as examples to demonstrate how multimedia cloud computing works for mobile devices.
