Fidelio Trio at the Johannesburg Musical Society | Looking at arts ...

The Fidelio Trio is an English group of three young people, Mary Dullea (piano), Darragh Morgan (violin) and Robin Michael (cello).

This trio arrived in Johannesburg on 31 August 2012, sans their luggage. Nationalistic loyalty made me relieved when I heard that the trio had travelled Lufthansa. They apologised for their lack of fashion panache, but they had been shopping and they all looked perfectly acceptable in their new black outfits. At some point in the proceedings they thanked Dr Avril Rubenstein, Chairman of the Johannesburg Musical Society who had driven them all over the city while they shopped this morning. Fortunately their instruments were all hand luggage. As Professor Stephen Jurisich pointed out, a lot conspired against this concert ? there was a power failure in progress when we arrived at the Linder Auditorium. The concert proceeded to lighting provided by a generator. By interval the electricity was back and we could have coffee, most welcome in the spring evening chill.

The programme was beautifully chosen, beginning appropriately for their name, with Beethoven?s Piano Trio in E Flat Major, Opus 1 No 1, followed by Faure?s Piano Trio in D Minor, Opus 120. After interval Franz Liszt?s Orphee: Poeme Symphonique, S598, arranged by Camille Saint-Saens was followed by Anton Arensky?s Piano Trio Not 1 in D Minor. They were all beautiful and accessible works, played very well. I enjoyed the concert.

The Fidelio Trio are on a fleeting visit to South Africa, playing only three concerts ? this one for the Johannesburg Musical Society, one at Brooklyn Theatre in Pretoria on Sunday 2 September 2012 at 15:00 and one in Durban for Friends of Music at the Jewish Club at 19:45 on 4 September 2012. The programme is the same as above, except that the Liszt will not be played in Pretoria.

Further concerts in the JMS series are as follows:
Sunday 30 September 17:00 (Wolfgang Emmanuel Schmidt on cello and Bryan Wallick on piano). This is the Nabarro Chamber Concert 2012. Frank Nabarro was a physicist who was married to Margaret, an ethno-musicologist. He was Honorary President of the Johannesburg Musical Society, and he established the Margaret Dalziel Nabarro Chamber Concert Fund in her memory.
Sunday 13 October 20:00 (Konstantin Scherbakov on piano)
Saturday 17 November 20:00 (Inon Barnaton on piano). This is the Percy Baneshik Concert 2012. Percy Baneshik was a playwright and arts journalist who often spoke out against the injustice of apartheid.

All concerts take place at The Linder Auditorium which is situated at the Education campus of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), 27 St Andrews Road, Parktown. Telephone 011 717 3223. GPS co-ordinates: 26? 10? 54.6456? S, 28? 2? 29.8932? E. There is plenty of parking in front of the venue, with more to the sides and behind the auditorium. Facilities for physically disabled patrons are available. The Siyafunda Cafe will be open before the concert and during interval for wine, tea and snacks.
