Editor's Note:?This product has not yet been tested. The following coverage is based on information provided by the manufacturer or developer.

Mac OS X Lion users already have an "apps" environment, meaning a bunch of services that have been Web-based for the past several years are now offered as small downloadable applications that run independently of a Web browser. In other words, the desktop or laptop environment is becoming more like a smartphone environment: full of apps. Pokki?(currently in beta)?offers the same experience to Windows users (XP, Vista, and 7). Pokki is a budding apps store for Windows, with support for Mac due out in the near future (although, with a Mac app store already in place, Pokki's services will likely be more appealing to Windows users). Apps already exist for Gmail, Facebook,?Grooveshark (music streaming site and service), Tweeki (Twitter client), and others.

The forty-odd apps that are already available can be downloaded from Pokki's website for free. Mac users interested in the alternative apps should see some releases in late 2011.
