Is Kentucky In Danger of Making the NCAA Tournament?

Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

The Kentucky Wildcats entered the 2012-13 college basketball season with very high expectation. Kentucky clearly has not met those expectations, but they have been a good team, not great, and that is okay. However, the Wildcats are now in danger of missing the NCAA tournament altogether.

Kentucky just recently went on a five-game winning streak in the SEC and looked like it could possibly challenge the Florida Gators for the regular season title. The Wildcats were only one-game back in the standings before taking on Florida, but it all went crashing down during that game.

Not only did Florida dominate that entire contest, but Kentucky?s star player Nerlens Noel went down with a season ending knee injury.

Noel was averaging 10.5 points per game, 9.5 rebounds per game, 2.1 steals per game and 4.4 blocks per game. From a defensive standpoint, those numbers cannot be replaced and it showed in the game against Tennessee, which was the first full game without Noel.

Kentucky ended up losing that game by the score of 88-58. Sure, that game was on the road, but Tennessee has had issues on offense all season long being the ninth ranked team in points per game in the conference. That was clearly not the case against the Wildcats.

This team still has six games left in the regular season, including games against Missouri and Florida, so it will have to figure out its identity very quickly.

Kentucky is now three games back in the SEC standings with an 8-4 conference record. It is 17-8 on the season overall and if it continues this downward trend, it will not make the big dance this year.
