The Centered Glass Home Screen [Featured Iphone Home Screen]

The Centered Glass Home ScreenReader Albert put together his own iOS theme, called Sarcina, in an effort to mix simplicity and minimalism with beauty. Here's how he put it together.

I asked myself, how minimalistic could I make my home screen with the original, "Apple-like" rounded icons but keep a certain amount of functionality. Earlier in the day, I had received the theme "Sarif" free from the maker itself, codylg. Graciously accepting the theme, it included the minimalistic status bar and the simple, glass status bar. After a few hours of tweaking and experimenting, I picked out a nice blue, blurry background that would accommodate the color scheme of the icons and created a custom 2x2 icon layout with Iconoclasm and added a glass frame to the background using GIMP to distinguish the center with the dock. To finish the home screen, I added a nice weather and date widget using iWidgets with a custom HTML widget I had received from my friend.

Using Springtomize, I hid the carrier name to save unneeded space. I also hid the battery icon and enabled the battery percentage in its place. The dock icons are centered with the help of iBlank which created 2 blank icons to put at the side of both dock icons.

To put this together, you'll need these tools:

You can see more on Albert's MyColorScreen profile and DeviantART page.

Do you have an awesome, tweaked-into-oblivion home or lock screen of your own that you'd like to share? Go ahead and post it on the #homescreenshowcase forum with a description of how you made it and it may be the next featured home screen.

Jimmie Johnson stayed silent out of frustration

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) ? Jimmie Johnson said Friday he was too frustrated to speak to reporters following his engine failure at Michigan.

The five-time NASCAR champion was leading with five laps remaining in Sunday's race when the engine expired in his Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. He quickly left the track, and uncharacteristically did not stop to talk to the media.

The win would have given Johnson a series-best four on the season, and earned him an additional three points toward seeding in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship. Instead, he finished 27th and dropped from first to fourth in the standings.

Additionally, championship contender Greg Biffle inherited the win ? his second of the year ? and earned the bonus points that Johnson had been eyeing.

"Last week with the emotion, there were so many levels of frustration that came through," Johnson said. "From gifting a fellow Chaser bonus points, a win, to losing two engines that weekend and losing the championship points lead, which is really important to me. All that just came to a head and there wasn't much else to say."

His post-race disappointment was almost as newsy as his result, as Johnson rarely refuses to do interviews.

He said there was simply nothing to say.

"Everyone watching clearly knew I had an engine failure and that I was disappointed," Johnson said. "Just didn't make any sense to me to talk with everyone and draw further attention to the engine shop, which works so hard to put me on the racetrack week in and week out."

Johnson will try to rebound Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. There are three races remaining before the Chase begins, and the five-time champion is essentially guaranteed one of the 12 spots in the field.

Travel Specialist Shares Why You Should Always ... - Business Insider

Metasearch sites like Kayak and Orbitz have become incredibly popular in recent years, offering travelers a way to compare airfare among multiple carriers.

But it's not necessarily the smartest way to go, says travel specialist Brett Synder. You may end up paying a much higher price for your low-cost ticket.

Snyder offered us a few reasons why you should always book through a carrier:

Fees are hidden. Let's say you're about to buy a ticket and want to check the baggage fees for your flight. "If you go on Expedia and click on baggage info, it just opens up a huge, long list of airlines and what their fees are," says Snyder. "On some sites you don't even have that option." Not only is it time-consuming to wade through these lists, there's the risk of mistaking a fee and not having enough to pay. What's more, some sites don't let users tack on fees to their fare.?

All airlines look equal (but aren't). Take Spirit Airlines, a carrier that's notorious for slapping fliers with fees. On a site like Kayak or Orbitz, Spirit's fare may seem like a bargain. But travelers may be in for a rude awakening when they go to check their bags at the airport. On metasearch sites, "people don't really know what's going to be different about flying Spirit, and that's frustrating," Snyder says.?

No true price comparison. Consumers have a hard time seeing the "true price" of a fare not only for the reasons listed above, but due to the fact that there's no true apples to apples comparison between carriers. For example, Spirit may charge $227 for a flight while Jet Blue is charging $280. But that doesn't account for checked bag fees or anything else.?

The better bet

The best way to book a fare online is through the airlines' site, says Snyder. Though meta sites are great for seeing an airfare's price point, a carrier's site is the better place to view fees and customize fares with meals, seats, checked bags, and so forth. You'll also save yourself time?no sorting through lists?and might find a deal that's unique to the site.?

German state raids buildings in crackdown on neo-Nazi groups

Sascha Schuermann / AP

Police in plain clothes load items into a vehicle which they found in an apartment of alleged neo-Nazis in Dortmund, Germany on Wednesday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

DUESSELDORF, Germany???Nearly 1,000 police officers raided clubhouses and apartments of known neo-Nazis in western Germany on Thursday after a ban was placed on three violent far-right groups in the country's most populous state.

Ralf Jaeger, interior minister of North-Rhine Westphalia, announced the ban as part of an intensified crackdown on neo-Nazis in the industrial state. Police searched 146 premises, confiscating weapons, computer hard drives and election posters of the far-right National Democratic Party (NPD).

"(The objects seized) expose the tight bonds within the far-right scene,'' Jaeger said, referring to the relationship between the NPD and groups of violent militants known as "Kameradschaften" -- or "comradeships."

Jaeger called the groups affected by the ban "xenophobic, racist and anti-Semitic,'' adding: "They employ fists and knives against their political opponents.''

Although no arrests were made, Jaeger said the seizures could bolster attempts to ban the NPD, which Germany's national intelligence agency says is racist, anti-Semitic, revisionist and inspired by Adolf Hitler's Nazi ideology.

Groups with explicit neo-Nazi ideology are prohibited in Germany, but the NPD has so far been able to skirt politicians' and security officials' attempts to ban it. One such attempt against the NPD failed in 2003 after witnesses in the case were exposed as intelligence agency informants.

"We will continue to crack down on these enemies of the state and tread on their black leather boots,'' Jaeger said, referring to the footwear popular among skinheads.

The NPD has representatives in two state assemblies ? Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern?? but not in the federal parliament.

It blames immigrants for crime and unemployment and its voters are mostly unemployed young men with little education.

Last December, state authorities in North-Rhine Westphalia set up a new unit in Dusseldorf to police far-right players after shocking disclosures that a secretive neo-Nazi cell based in the eastern state of Thuringia had murdered 10 people ? eight ?of Turkish origin, one person of Greek origin, and a policewoman ? between 2000 and 2007, according to a report by Deutsche-Welle.?

DW reported that the state also set up special investigative units in Aachen and Dortmund as well as the Rhine River city of Cologne, where J?ger banned another far-right comradeship last May.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Is There A Need For More 'Male Birth Control'? | Talking About Men's ...

Uncategorized

The world population has passed 7 billion this year. It is growing at 75 million per year. It is a startling fact that 1 in 2 pregnancies are unplanned/unintended. Half these pregnancies are due to failure to use contraception and the other half is because of difficulties with contraception use or failure of the method. ?Most options for family planning are focused on the female partner. The options for male contraception at the present time are abstinence, withdrawal methods and condoms as a reversible options and vasectomy for permanent sterility. In this article we review the issue of male contraception and the options for men to participate in the prevention of unplanned pregnancies.

The National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) has shown that most women (99%) ages 15-44 have used some for contraception at some time either the pill or condoms. The type of contraception a couple/person uses is very much dependent on what stage of a relationship or life is ongoing. In early sexually active life, the main objective is reversible contraception, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STDs). To achieve this, options include the use of condoms and/or? a female method of birth control e.g. the pill, diaphragm, intrauterine device. ?As a couple becomes more stable in a relationship, prevention of STDs becomes less of a concern but maintaining the ability to prevent pregnancy. This results in the use of a reversible form of contraception that may include the condom or female methods as outlined. The next stage of life is when a stable relationship may result in consideration of a more permanent contraception option.? At this time, vasectomy for the man or tubal ligation for the women (having her ?tubes tied?) is considered. Such choices are very individual for men and women and include issues of trust and promiscuity. ?The prevailing theory in the general population and community is that contraception is more important to women since they are primarily involved with pregnancy. It is because of this mindset that female contraception is much more advanced in choices with the female birth control pill having its 50th anniversary in the last year. A number of studies have actually shown that men have both an interest and feel a responsibility for contraception. The current contraceptive choices for men are still somewhat limited. They include abstinence, withdrawal technique, condom or vasectomy. ?Condoms have been around for centuries with advances in the 20th century with the creation of latex rubber. ?The failure rate of condoms is quoted as one in fifty for perfect use; 15% for ?typical use? and breakage or slippage in 2-9%.? Percentage of high school students, who used a condom during their last sexual intercourse in the United States, has gone from 4 in 10 (40%) in 1991 to just over 6 in 10 (60%) in 2007. Although this is an improvement, it is not good enough and we need to continue to educate teenagers on prevention of teen pregnancies.? Condoms also remain the most effective method to prevent STDs/HIV.

Vasectomy practice in the USA reveals that approximately 527,000 vasectomies were performed in 2002. Vasectomy use has leveled out since the 1980s ? approx 10/1000 men aged 25-49. Vasectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that causes minimal discomfort and has a very high success rate. It is a great option for couples who are finished with their family planning. This must be considered a permanent option although a small percentage of men (6 of 100 or 6%) may consider fertility after vasectomy usually related to a new relationship and new partner. ?Men who have a vasectomy are not?? cleared of the risk of sexually transmitted diseases. A recent study has shown that men who have had a vasectomy are less likely to wear a condom for STD prevention.

The American Urological Association recently came out with guidelines on vasectomy. Post vasectomy sperm check is essential. This is important 15-20 ejaculations and 8-12 weeks from the time of vasectomy. Early or late reconnection of vasectomies do occur which is why waiting to check the sperm count until after approximately 3 months is recommended. The failure rate from a vasectomy is either measured in terms of sperm still being present in the semen after a vasectomy or pregnancy risk. The pregnancy risk after a vasectomy is 1 in 2000, which is the same to less risk of pregnancy for a women who has her ?tubes tied?.

  • In the future, a number of issues need to be addressed for contraception for men (and women): Better education on compliance for contraception along with increased personal responsibility
  • Better public awareness of options
  • Better access to options
  • Development of a reversible male contraceptive other than condoms. With this, options to prevent STD?s are still not addressed.
  • Male and female opinion on compliance/trust issues

With the female pill being over 50 years old, development of a reversible ?male pill? is ongoing, with extensive research being sponsored by several organizations. Overall, contraception is an important choice and as such, patients and providers a like need to be aware of choices.

US train derailment takes out internet at ... - World News Tomorrow

August 22, 2012

? The Editor World News Tomorrow ? World News

WORLD NEWS TOMORROW -? Hearings had been scheduled to begin on Wednesday for the alleged mastermind of the hijacked plane attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and four others facing death penalty charges of mass murder, terrorism and conspiring with al-Qaeda.

The train derailment in the Baltimore, Maryland, area that killed two young women knocked out fiber optic lines that are part of the wire-and-satellite network providing communications to the remote US naval base in eastern Cuba, said Captain Robert Durand, a spokesman for the Guantanamo detention operation.

That left defence lawyers and prosecutors at the base temporarily unable to access email and electronic legal files. Defense lawyers said the network breakdown had drastically interrupted preparations for the hearings, and filed an emergency request for a delay.

The judge, Army Colonel James Pohl, postponed the start of the hearings until Thursday. The session was scheduled to last six days to address secrecy rules governing the trials, among other issues.

The United States maintains an economic embargo on Cuba that is intended to put pressure on the island?s communist government and there are no communications links between the U.S. base and the rest of Cuba.

Satellites relay phone and Internet signals to and from the base, linking it with communications networks in Maryland and Maine. The Maryland link was expected to be fully restored by Tuesday evening, Captain Durand said.

The hearings could face additional disruption from Tropical Storm Isaac, which formed in the Atlantic Ocean east of the Lesser Antilles. It was forecast to strengthen as it moved into the Caribbean Sea by Thursday, and could threaten Guantanamo as a hurricane on Saturday, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) ? Grab your camera and binoculars: There's rarely been a better time to go whale-watching off the California coast.

Tourists from around the world have been flocking to Monterey Bay to catch a glimpse of the massive marine mammals, including impressive numbers of blue whales, the largest animals on earth.

Longtime observers say they've seen a sharp increase in endangered blue and humpback whales feeding near California shores, where they spend the spring and summer before heading to their winter breeding grounds off Mexico and Central America.

"It's phenomenal that these humongous creatures are out there and we just get to go out on a boat and go out and watch them," said Santa Cruz resident Susan Stuart after a recent whale-watching cruise.

What's bringing the whales so close to shore? A bumper harvest of their favorite food: tiny, shrimplike critters known as krill.

Strong northwest winds have been pushing up cold, nutrient-rich waters from the ocean bottom ? a phenomenon known as upwelling. That has fueled blooms of phytoplankton that have led to an explosion of krill, the main food source of blue and humpback whales.

"The season overall has been pretty exceptional and we're not done," said Nancy Black, a marine biologist with Monterey Bay Whale Watch, which offers bay cruises twice daily.

The abundance of whales has been a boon to boat tour operators in Monterey Bay, whose deep underwater canyon makes it one of the best places to see whales, dolphins and other marine life.

"The word is out right now. If you want to see a whale or blue whale or several species of whale, now's the time to go for sure," said Ken Stagnaro, co-owner, Santa Cruz Whale Watching, who estimates business has doubled this year over last year.

But the rebound in whale populations has led to a new problem: more collisions with the giant cargo ships heading in and out of San Francisco Bay, one of the world's busiest ports, experts say.

"When a ship strikes a whale, it's usually not a good outcome. Often times the vertebrae are broken and the whale dies," said Maria Brown, superintendent of the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.

Federal officials are working with conservation groups and the shipping industry on a plan to help protect the whales around San Francisco Bay. They want to reroute ship traffic and improve tracking of whales to reduce collisions.

Conservationists want to ensure that future generations get a chance to see the world's largest animals.

"When you see a whale in the wild, it's a life changing experience," said Maureen Gilbert, an on-board naturalist for Santa Cruz Whale Watching. "You're never the same person after you've had that kind of encounter with a wild animal."

(AP) ? Firefighters in Northern California are making progress in containing a huge wildfire that has burned dozens of homes and other structures in remote, densely forested terrain.

The Ponderosa Fire, which has scorched about 38 square miles, was 50 percent contained Wednesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The threat to homes about 35 miles east of Redding has dropped from 3,500 earlier this week to roughly 200 residences.

"There's still work to be done, but good progress is definitely being made," Berlant said Wednesday.

Fire crews assessing the rural area determined Tuesday that 50 buildings had been destroyed since it was sparked by lightning Saturday, Daniel Berlant said. It was unclear when the structures burned and how many were homes.

More than 2,100 firefighters were battling the fire near the remote towns of Shingletown, Manton and Viola, about 170 miles north of Sacramento.

As the wildfire raged near Lynn Rodgers' home of less than a year, the evacuated resident said Tuesday she remained optimistic ? despite her growing frustration and fear.

"Yeah, but what can you do? Everything is in God's hands ? and the firefighters," said Rodgers, who lives in Shingletown.

Like Rodgers, many other evacuees were anxious to hear the latest information from officials. Dozens of people, as well as about a dozen dogs, were waiting at a gym in Redding.

"The evacuation part? It's hard because I don't know what's happening to the house up there," said Jimmy Hall, a Shingletown resident whose family spent another night sleeping on cots.

"It's my dad's house. ... There's a lot of things in there," Hall added. "I've heard that my friend is still up there protecting his house. It's just hard. Look at how we're sleeping."

Eric Kiltz, an emergency services coordinator for the American Red Cross, said "there's more frustration than anxiety, and people, for the most part are grateful they have a safe and secure place to stay, even though their home may be lost."

The fast-moving fire is one of many burning across the West, where dry lightning has sparked fires in grass, brush and timber.

California Gov. Jerry Brown announced Tuesday that National Guard troops will be assisting with the firefighting efforts. The news comes a day after the Federal Emergency Management Agency said it is offering federal funds to help cover the cost.

The fire forced the closure of Highway 44 and other roads, and prompted the declaration of an emergency in Shasta County.

Elsewhere in California, a massive wildfire in Plumas National Forest continued to expand, helped by gusty winds. The blaze, about 120 miles north of Sacramento, has consumed nearly 98 square miles since it started at the end of July and threatens about 900 homes. It was 37 percent contained Wednesday.

In Mendocino County, the sheriff's office issued a mandatory evacuation for residents in Covelo due to a wildfire that has burned more than 18 square miles of thick timber and rugged terrain. One outbuilding has been destroyed and 45 homes were threatened by the blaze, officials said. The fire was sparked by lightning Saturday in a remote area, making it difficult for fire crews to access.

In Washington state, the National Weather Service warned about extreme fire danger in the eastern part of the state as forecasts called for thunderstorms with lightning.

Fire crews to the north still hoped to fully contain a week-old wildfire that has destroyed 51 homes and 26 outbuildings and damaged at least six other homes, fire information officer Mark Morrow said.

The fire, about 75 miles east of Seattle, has caused an estimated $8.3 million in property damage.

Lightning over the weekend also sparked smaller fires in Colorado, Idaho and Utah.

Cloud brightening to control global warming? Geoengineers propose an experiment

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Even though it sounds like science fiction, researchers are taking a second look at a controversial idea that uses futuristic ships to shoot salt water high into the sky over the oceans, creating clouds that reflect sunlight and thus counter global warming.

University of Washington atmospheric physicist Rob Wood describes a possible way to run an experiment to test the concept on a small scale in a comprehensive paper published this month in the journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.

The point of the paper -- which includes updates on the latest study into what kind of ship would be best to spray the salt water into the sky, how large the water droplets should be and the potential climatological impacts -- is to encourage more scientists to consider the idea of marine cloud brightening and even poke holes in it. In the paper, he and a colleague detail an experiment to test the concept.

"What we're trying to do is make the case that this is a beneficial experiment to do," Wood said. With enough interest in cloud brightening from the scientific community, funding for an experiment may become possible, he said.

The theory behind so-called marine cloud brightening is that adding particles, in this case sea salt, to the sky over the ocean would form large, long-lived clouds. Clouds appear when water forms around particles. Since there is a limited amount of water in the air, adding more particles creates more, but smaller, droplets.

"It turns out that a greater number of smaller drops has a greater surface area, so it means the clouds reflect a greater amount of light back into space," Wood said. That creates a cooling effect on Earth.

Marine cloud brightening is part of a broader concept known as geoengineering which encompasses efforts to use technology to manipulate the environment. Brightening, like other geoengineering proposals, is controversial for its ethical and political ramifications and the uncertainty around its impact. But those aren't reasons not to study it, Wood said.

"I would rather that responsible scientists test the idea than groups that might have a vested interest in proving its success," he said. The danger with private organizations experimenting with geoengineering is that "there is an assumption that it's got to work," he said.

Wood and his colleagues propose trying a small-scale experiment to test feasibility and begin to study effects. The test should start by deploying sprayers on a ship or barge to ensure that they can inject enough particles of the targeted size to the appropriate elevation, Wood and a colleague wrote in the report. An airplane equipped with sensors would study the physical and chemical characteristics of the particles and how they disperse.

The next step would be to use additional airplanes to study how the cloud develops and how long it remains. The final phase of the experiment would send out five to 10 ships spread out across a 100 kilometer, or 62 mile, stretch. The resulting clouds would be large enough so that scientists could use satellites to examine them and their ability to reflect light.

Wood said there is very little chance of long-term effects from such an experiment. Based on studies of pollutants, which emit particles that cause a similar reaction in clouds, scientists know that the impact of adding particles to clouds lasts only a few days.

Still, such an experiment would be unusual in the world of climate science, where scientists observe rather than actually try to change the atmosphere.

Wood notes that running the experiment would advance knowledge around how particles like pollutants impact the climate, although the main reason to do it would be to test the geoengineering idea.

A phenomenon that inspired marine cloud brightening is ship trails: clouds that form behind the paths of ships crossing the ocean, similar to the trails that airplanes leave across the sky. Ship trails form around particles released from burning fuel.

But in some cases ship trails make clouds darker. "We don't really know why that is," Wood said.

Despite increasing interest from scientists like Wood, there is still strong resistance to cloud brightening.

"It's a quick-fix idea when really what we need to do is move toward a low-carbon emission economy, which is turning out to be a long process," Wood said. "I think we ought to know about the possibilities, just in case."

The authors of the paper are treading cautiously.

"We stress that there would be no justification for deployment of [marine cloud brightening] unless it was clearly established that no significant adverse consequences would result. There would also need to be an international agreement firmly in favor of such action," they wrote in the paper's summary.

There are 25 authors on the paper, including scientists from University of Leeds, University of Edinburgh and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The lead author is John Latham of the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University of Manchester, who pioneered the idea of marine cloud brightening.

Wood's research was supported by the UW College of the Environment Institute.

Smallknot: Small business investing for anyone | MNN - Mother ...

The buy local movement is growing in the United States but one new startup is adding a twist to this trend: investing local as well. Smallknot is a new small business investing site that lets everyday consumers support small businesses in our communities in exchange for good and services.

?

Smallknot works only with small, local business owners who need a financial boost to expand. ?Maybe your favorite coffee shop wants to build a new back patio, or your favorite pizza place needs a new oven. For a lot of local businesses, even very successful ones, projects like these get put on hold or never happen because of a lack of access to capital,? says the?Smallknot?website.

?

Projects like these may only cost a few thousand dollars, but in a slowly recovering economy, it isn?t exactly easy for the business owner to front the money. This also isn?t typically the lending realm of financial giants like Bank of America, and so this is where Smallknot comes into play.

?

Jay Lee, CEO of Smallknot, explained more about the company during a recent email interview.

?

MNN: When was Smallknot founded?

Jay Lee: It depends on what you mean by founded! I first left my career as a securities lawyer in June 2011 with nothing more than a belief and concept of local investment, but no real ability to execute on my own. I spent months as a solo founder just thinking about ways to make this work. I brought on my first co-founder Ben Rossen in October 2011, but the full founding team didn't come together until March 2012 when our CTO Jason Punzalan joined as a co-founder. We launched our current platform in mid-June 2012. ? ?

?

What was the inspiration behind Smallknot?

At its core, Smallknot just stemmed from witnessing the madness of the financial system from the inside and understanding the value of small businesses in our communities. Ben and I had spent years deep on the legal side of the financial world of investment banks, billion-dollar deals and massive global capital flows. We lived and played in local restaurants, retail, bars and other spots, but until the collapse of Lehman and the credit crunch that decimated the small business economy, we had always taken the vitality of our neighborhoods for granted. There was just a moment when we stepped back and realized that it was simple to move all of our retirement savings and investments into huge companies across the world, but there was no way to take the smallest bit of capital and invest it into the small business 50 yards away. That felt ridiculous. My local coffee shop and bookstore are the places where my life actually happens, and there is really no way to take an active role in its success. So, we're trying to do just that. ?

?

How many companies have received funding from a Smallknot campaign?? How much has been awarded thus far?

So far we have successfully funded 8 businesses and expect 2 more in the coming week or so and we will have helped fund nearly $60,000 in small business capital within the last couple of months. Things are picking up though, so we expect those numbers to start climbing dramatically in the coming months. ?

?

How do companies apply for a Smallknot campaign?

Small business owners are the busiest people alive, so it's vital that the process is simple. As of today, just send us an email at ben@smallknot.com or jay@smallknot.com and we can walk you through the process very quickly and easily. Within the next couple of weeks, we will roll out our self-service application process so business owners can run the process themselves. We built it to be as simple and easy as possible, so a business owner seeking funding on Smallknot can simply log onto the site and apply to build and run a campaign. ??

?

Where do you see Smallknot in one year?? Five years?

Ultimately, our vision is to build a platform for communities to finance themselves and in the process, build the connective tissue between businesses and their communities. A new way to promote community self ?empowerment. Geographically, we would like to be in over a dozen cities around the country within the year. Within five years, we want to be the place where aspiring entrepreneurs and successful business owners can go to get the capital they need to help them grow and thrive, and the place where everyone feels empowered to get directly involved in building their local economy and building the community they want to live in. ?

?

*****

?

One of the campaigns currently live on the site is Neighborhoodies, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based company that is launching a new clothing collection while creating jobs for single moms. With a $75 investment in the campaign, you will receive a customized super heavy-duty hoodie and a one-month membership to The Mutual. If you have $1,000 to invest you'll receive 25 custom hoodies. There are only a couple of days left in the Neighborhoodies campaign, and the company is close to reaching its goal.

?

I already buy local whenever I can and so I?m excited to see Smallknot grow to be the company that Lee wants it to be. I love the idea of financially supporting a small business that in turn will help support the community. I always see the phrase ?small businesses are the backbone of our economy? and with Smallknot?s help, these small businesses will help boost the economy in the neighborhoods they serve.

?

MM Founder Shares Campaign Memories in The Foodie Journal

Monday Campaigns founder and chairman Sid Lerner was recently interviewed by The Foodie Journal, a new Meatless Monday blog that is offering weekly recipes with the help of inSHAPE personal training and nutrition services.

The Foodie Journal is one of hundreds of blogs that offer Meatless Monday recipes each week. The site is collaborating with the experts at inSHAPE Fitness to ensure that their menu selections are both delicious and nutritionally balanced. ?I was a proponent of the Meatless Monday campaign since I first heard of it, considering how it can help both individuals and the planet,? says Foodie Journal creator Reuben Varzea. ?So, when I had the opportunity to team up with inSHAPE Fitness to provide regular meatless recipes on The Foodie Journal, it was an obvious win-win.?

To celebrate the new Meatless Monday offerings, Varzea sat down with our founder to discuss the history of the movement, some of the campaign?s recent successes, and to look back on a few favorite food memories:

Foodie Journal: So how did you get your start with the idea of Meatless Monday? How did Meatless Monday come to exist?

Sid Lerner: Well, I was semi-retired and doing some pro bono consulting. I was at a conference about 9 years ago at Johns Hopkins. At the time obesity wasn?t the headline. Cholesterol was, as were saturated fat, heart disease, cancer, etc. So the question was raised as to how much meat we were eating, you know? How much is too much? The FDA and USDA were saying about 15% of our diet would be the recommended amount. Well, we?re eating about twice the meat per capita than we should be, about double what we were eating in the 40?s and the 50?s when I was growing up. That was a major contributor to a lot of the growing health issues we had been seeing. So for the past 9 years it was something we started to talk about. Trying to cut down on the amount of meat that people consume. We did the math and found that cutting down to get to that 15% recommendation meant cutting out 3 meals worth of meat each week. Just one day a week! So if we cut out meat for just one day a week we?d get closer to where we needed to be.

I remember from my childhood during World War II President Roosevelt instituted a conservation program called ?Meatless Monday?. We did some research and found that it was something he had taken from Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Hoover during World War I, when it was also instituted as a conservation program. We really liked the name, and we decided to use it to start a new campaign to cut back on meat one day a week. So we built a non-profit organization around the idea and called it the Monday Campaigns. It was the perfect day because so many people look at Monday as a fresh start, you know? ?Well I screwed up last week, how can I do right this week?? [LAUGHS] But we?ve had some great success with it. We have 23 countries that have picked it up around the world.

FJ: What are some of the benefits that come from being involved with Meatless Mondays?

SL: Well, we started out primarily to try to cut back on one of the major sources of saturated fats which is animal products. Also thinking about the environmental issues that come from raising these animals, greenhouse gases and what not. So while initially we got a lot of interest from people who were interested in better health, over the past few years we?ve had additional support come from people interested in helping the environment. So It?s beneficial in many different ways.

FJ: What kind of reaction have you had from those in the food industry?

SL: It?s been great! A great response. We just sent out flyers and emails to more chefs and restaurants about the program. A good showing of how this works well for restaurants, we have Dovetail in New York City with Chef John Fraser who did an interview on NPR about it, and he said that Meatless Monday has been great for them. Every Monday night as a result has become kind of like an event because of it. And, it?s interesting as a restauranteur cause you end up seeing a very different demographic in the restaurant that you might not see on a Tuesday or a Saturday. We also have Jason Weiner at the Almond Restaurant, and he?s commented on how it?s expanding their clientele, challenging their cooks and helping them to support local growers.

Also we have wonderful Mario Batali who was one of the first to get on board, and he?s the prince of pork! His fourteen restaurants all participate in Meatless Monday which is pretty incredible. He?s also on the TV show ?The Chew? on ABC and they gave us a full hour on their show a couple of months ago about Meatless Monday which was great.

But, simply put, Meatless Mondays is a win-win-win. It?s a win for the diners, it?s a win for the restaurants and growers, and a win for the planet. In retrospect I have no idea why it took me so long to get on board!

FJ: So, I have a personal question for you. Do you have a particular food memory that you enjoy remembering or thinking back on that you?d like to share?

SL: Oh sure! People sometimes think that just because we promote this idea of Meatless Monday, and trying to be healthy that we don?t enjoy food. That couldn?t be further from the truth! For me, though, it?s a very simple memory. My mother came from Hungary, and she had all different kinds of dishes that she would make. One of my favorites was in the winter time when she?s take out maybe a day-old rye bread that had been well toasted and she?d put butter on it and just rub it with garlic cloves until the garlic would just disappear. Would be so much garlic we could practically go outside and breath the snow away! [LAUGHS] I?m a major garlic fan. I love it!

Why Suffolk County NY Foreclosures Don't Sell

Suffolk County NY foreclosures can take a long time to sell, and depress other property values in the meantime. Ever wonder why that house on your street is just sitting there and making the neighborhood look run down?

Why foreclosures don't sellIt's not hard to spot these un-cared for homes with the peeling paint, overgrown lawns, and bushes that look like they haven't been trimmed in years. Chances are, they haven't been.

Some Suffolk County NY foreclosures are taking nine to fifteen months to sell. Rules and regulations can be tough, depending on the state. Fannie Mae deals, for example, adhere to strict guidelines. Once the price is set, it can't be reduced in the first 30 days, but few buyers are willing to pay full asking price for distressed homes. After a month, the price is lowered incrementally by 5% or 10%. Because Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac focus on the bottom line ? and not how a property looks ? this leaves little room for negotiation.

Banks are slammed by high foreclosure volume and the additional scrutiny resulting from improper foreclosures of the past. Some have wondered if banks are concerned about flooding the market with foreclosures, and it now seems that banks are more comfortable foreclosing again.

How much time does it take to settle a typical foreclosure? Try 370 days ? and then add another 180 days before it's actually sold. That's more than a year and a half to get a run-down property into the hands of a responsible homeowner. This doesn't even take into account the delays that can be added if there is a tenant in the property. To gain perspective on how bad things are, the average foreclosure in 2007 took just 150 days to close.

The good news is we should see home sales speed up in the near future. In the first quarter of 2012, a 25% increase in pre-foreclosure sales signaled the tide is turning for how banks deal with distressed homes. Juncker: Greece won't leave eurozone

VIENNA (AP) ? Luxembourg's prime minister says Greece won't leave the 17-nation eurozone ? arguing that an exit wouldn't be politically feasible and would carry unforeseeable risks.

Greece has been kept afloat by international loans but fallen behind on implementing reforms and austerity measures demanded in exchange, feeding speculation about a possible euro exit.

But Luxembourg's Jean-Claude Juncker, who also chairs eurozone finance ministers' meetings, was quoted Saturday as saying in an interview with Austria's Tiroler Tageszeitung newspaper: "It will not happen ? unless Greece violates all the conditions and keeps to no agreements."

Juncker said he assumes Greece will redouble efforts to reach its targets ? so "there is no reason to assume that this exit scenario can become relevant." He said an exit would be "technically" but not "politically" feasible.
