HBT: Cashman has 'interest in Freddy and Bartolo'

Brian Cashman said today that he is interested in re-signing both Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia. From ESPN New York:

?I have an interest in both Freddy and Bartolo. Those guys all did a good job for us, a really good job.?

Makes sense. Particularly Garcia who it is not quite as unreasonable to assume can do what he did in 2011 in 2012. ?Colon?s surprising year doesn?t strike me as potentially replicable, though I suppose it could happen.

But of course the Yankees are on a budget, so they may not be able to make the kind of big splash that getting both of those guys would require ?

Erwinaze Approved for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Nov. 18 (HealthDay News) -- Erwinaze (asparaginase Erwinia chrysanthemi) has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) among people who have developed an allergy to more standard treatments.

In this type of cancer, bone marrow produces too many infection-fighting white blood cells called lymphocytes. Typically, treatments include asparaginase and pegaspargase chemotherapy drugs. But some patients develop allergies to these medications.

Newly approved Erwinaze, injected into a muscle three times weekly, breaks down a protein building block that helps overabundant white blood cells (leukemia cells) grow. Without this protein, the leukemia cells die, the FDA said in a news release.

The safety and effectiveness of Erwinaze were evaluated in clinical studies involving 58 people. Additional safety data was harvested from a separate trial involving 843 patients, the FDA said. Observed side effects of Erwinaze included severe allergic reactions, pancreatic inflammation, high liver enzymes, abnormal bleeding or clotting, nausea and high blood sugar.

Erwinaze has been designated an orphan drug, since ALL affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States, the FDA said.

The drug is produced by EUSA Pharma Inc., based in Langhorne, Pa.

Deficit gridlock looms, supercommittee deadlocked (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Deadline nearing, the deficit-reduction talks in Congress sank toward gridlock Friday after supercommittee Democrats rejected a late Republican offer that included next-to-nothing in new tax revenue. Each side maneuvered to blame the other for a looming stalemate.

The panel faces a deadline of next Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, and lawmakers on both sides stressed they were ready to meet through the weekend in a last-ditch search for compromise.

But there was little indication after a day of closed-door meetings that a breakthrough was likely, both Democrats and Republicans emphasizing long-held political positions.

"Where the divide is right now is over taxes, and whether the wealthiest Americans should share in the sacrifices," said Washington Sen. Patty Murray, the Democratic co-chair of the panel.

But Michael Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, said Republicans had offered "a balanced, bipartisan plan - the fact that it was rejected makes it clear that Washington Democrats won't cut a dime in government spending without job-killing tax hikes."

While prospects for a deal faded, House Democrats checked a Republican attempt to pass a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. The vote was 261-165, or 23 shy of the two-thirds majority required. GOP lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor, while Democrats generally opposed it, sealing its doom.

The vote on a noisy House floor contrasted to the secretive proceedings inside the supercommittee, a panel that projected optimism when it began its quest for a deficit deal late last summer but has yet to come to any significant compromise.

Republicans disclosed during the day they had outlined an offer on Thursday for about $543 billion in spending cuts ? leaving Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security untouched ? and $3 billion in higher tax revenue.

Most if not all of the recommended savings were items that Democrats have agreed to in earlier talks, but only, party officials said, on condition they part of a larger deal in which Republicans agreed to additional tax increases.

Democrats have long demanded that Republicans agree to significant amounts of higher taxes on the wealthy as part of any deal, and they quickly rejected the offer, according to officials in both parties.

It was unclear where the talks would turn next, but the GOP proposal suggested the discussions had effectively moved into a range of savings far below the $1.2 trillion the committee has been seeking.

It also appeared Republicans were jettisoning a plan for $300 billion in higher tax revenue, an offer that had exposed internal GOP divisions when it was presented two weeks ago. It also has failed to generate momentum for a compromise among Democrats.

If the panel fails to reach agreement, $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts are to take effect beginning in 2013, a prospect that lawmakers in both parties say they want to avoid.

That is particularly true among defense hawks, who argue that the Pentagon cannot sustain the estimated $500 billion in cuts that would be required on top of the $450 billion already in the works.

In a letter to Murray and Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, the GOP chairman of the supercommittee, the head of the House Armed Services Committee warned of "immediate, dire and in some cases irrevocable" damage to the nation's military. "Our ability to respond to national security crises or humanitarian disasters would be disrupted," added Rep. Howard P. (Buck) McKeon, R-Calif.

Republicans familiar with the GOP plan said it included $543 billion in spending cuts, fees and other non-tax revenue, as well as the $3 billion corporate jet provision. There also would be $98 billion in reduced interest costs.

Officials familiar with the offer said it would save the government $121 billion by requiring federal civilian workers to contribute more to their pension plans, shave $23 billion from farm and nutrition programs and generate $15 billion from new auctions of broadcast spectrum to wireless companies.

It also would claim about $100 billion in savings from Pentagon civilian personnel costs and another $35 billion by increasing the fee that mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac charge lenders to guarantee repayment of new loans. The fee increase would add $15 a month to the monthly cost of an average new mortgage.

The per-ticket security fee to pay for Transportation Security Administration operations at the nation's airports would increase, and $18 billion would come from savings within Postal Service accounts.

Walmart rolls out digital movie downloads with Vudu-to-Go (Digital Trends)

vudu-screen

Designed for the traveler, Vudu now allows users to download movies that have been purchased on the service. Previously, the service would only allow users to stream content over a PC or mobile device to watch a film or television show. This allows users to download an entire film similar to iTunes and watch at a later time. This also allows users with slower broadband connections to download an entire film instead of waiting for buffering while attempting to steam a 1080p version of a movie. However, downloads are only available for purchased movies rather than rentals. Avid movie watchers will have to stick with iTunes when renting a new movie to watch on an iPhone or iPad.

Vudu titlesBy adding the ability to download a standard definition quality version of the film, this puts Vudu in line with UltraViolet technology that?s being slowly launched by the movie studios.?UltraViolet allows a standard definition version of the movie to be downloaded to mobile devices after a physical copy is purchased. However, PlayStation 3 owners currently have the ability to download both Vudu rentals and purchases onto the hard drive included with the game console. Walmart is also attempting to introduce more people to the Vudu service by offering?$5 Vudu credit vouchers when customers purchase specific Blu-ray and DVD titles at a brick and mortar location. This promotion is continuing through the end of November and Black Friday shoppers will be able to take advantage when purchasing movies on sale that day.

A $5 voucher pays for the cost of a typical 720p HD rental of a new release on the Vudu service, but a 1080p version of the movie costs an extra dollar. Television episodes can also be rented starting at $1.99 an episode. Walmart has also struck a deal with HP that will include the Vudu application on the desktop when a new HP personal computer or laptop is purchased at Walmart.

As Libya dithers, fighters take on security role (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? At the Mellitah Oil & Gas facility, a joint venture between Italy's oil major Eni and the Libyan national oil company, fighters from the mountain city of Zintan stand guard.

Deep in the Sahara desert, 700 km south, another brigade of fighters from Zintan -- a city which prides itself as being one of the first to rise up against Muammar Gaddafi -- say they are securing the Akakus oil field in the absence of a national army.

Some of the fighters who ousted Gaddafi are not prepared to wait for their interim government to form a cabinet and begin the long task of rebuilding a functioning state. They are doing it for themselves.

Armed militias are acting as a pseudo-police force: setting up road checkpoints, directing traffic and arresting those they regard as criminals.

Groups of fighters from Misrata, 190 km to the east of the capital, have joined some Tripoli brigades to guard the naval base where several military ships that escaped the bombing by NATO during the war are docked.

At the Akakus field, fighters are positioned around the main facility, armed with heavy machine guns and rockets.

"The protection of this field is by Zintani fighters to prevent looting," said one guard at the gate to the field, which stands in a vast expanse of sandy desert.

All of the militias claim loyalty to the National Transitional Council (NTC), which promises to lead Libya toward participatory democracy, but also to the clans, towns or regions from which they hail.

Fighters give different reasons for not handing in their weapons and returning home.

Some say they are being paid by their commanders or are worried that a pro-Gaddafi insurgency will break out while the country is still weak. Others say they have a moral commitment to serve Libya, even unofficially.

But there are suggestions the militias also want to wield political leverage over the emerging government.

STARTING AN AIR FORCE

While officials hold secret meetings in Tripoli to decide on high-level positions, Colonel Abdullah al-Mehdi is trying to get the air force back in the air.

"People are crossing the border illegally from Niger and Mali. They are smuggling drugs and attacking oil fields to steal cars and equipment," Mehdi, from Zintan, told Reuters as he flew his favorite airplane from Gaddafi's defunct Libyan air force, a twin-engined Russian military transporter.

"We need to position planes at airports around the country to patrol the border." He said he intends to move some fighter jets from the capital to the border town of Ghadames and the southern desert city of Sabha.

"Two jets here, three there," the 49-year-old said.

Shouting over the roar of propellers, Mehdi says he has been transporting fighters and weapons to Libya's borderlands and worked as an air ambulance.

And more frequently now that the eight-month civil war has ended, he has ferried representatives of the interim government around the country to aid the reconciliation with tribes who fought for Gaddafi.

"I also run a prison," he added. Who Mehdi is working for is unclear -- both the defense and interior ministers are yet to be appointed -- but he collaborates with the Tripoli Military Council, the armed wing of the NTC.

"What ministry, I am the ministry," Mehdi said, a broad smile emerging under his thick, graying mustache.

With Gaddafi gone, Mehdi wants to reach out to the leaders of neighboring Mali and Chad to deal with drugs and weapons smuggling, before taking a holiday in Russia.

"I haven't had a day off or been paid for eight months," the pilot said in English.

"F*** money, we killed Muammar Gaddafi."

A crushing loss for Woods, a lead for Americans (AP)

MELBOURNE, Australia ? Tiger Woods made the first move, reaching out to shake hands with his ex-caddie, that went a long way toward dousing the endless chatter over their acrimonious breakup.

Twelve holes later, as short a Presidents Cup match that has ever been played, Steve Williams had the last laugh.

In the 112 matches of various formats that Woods has played in his professional career, he never had a loss like this one. Playing again with Steve Stricker, an American tandem that was unbeatable two years ago, they didn't win a hole and didn't make a birdie in tying the Presidents Cup record for the worst loss ever, 7 and 6.

Adam Scott ? with Williams on his bag, kept his distance from Woods until they shook hands on the 12th green ? and K.J. Choi rarely missed a shot in piling up pars and more than enough birdies. The foursomes match ended with Scott rolling in a 25-foot birdie putt on the 11th, and stuffing his approach into 10 feet for Choi's birdie on their final hole.

"We were just slightly off," Woods said. "On a golf course like this, it doesn't take much."

That match was the biggest surprise on an opening day that featured a few unlikely twists at the end, with the Americans making two late rally to halve matches and leaving Royal Melbourne with a 4-2 lead over the International team.

It was the third straight time the Americans have won the opening session.

"We are more excited than we were an hour-and-a-half before the day ended," U.S. captain Fred Couples said. "Our guys fought hard."

Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar, 3 down with seven holes to play, won the last two holes with pars to halve their match against the Aussie duo of Jason Day and Aaron Baddeley. Nick Watney and Bill Haas were 2 down with four holes to play and managed a halve against Geoff Ogilvy and Charl Schwartzel.

"My guys felt like they let a few matches slip away, no question about it," International captain Greg Norman said. "But they all understand. It's the game of golf. It does happen. Their heads are really held high. They are not worried about the next three days going forward. They all feel like they are playing extremely good golf."

The other matches were never close.

Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk, partners for the first time since the Ryder Cup in 1999, won five holes in a six-hole stretch for a 6-and-5 win over Retief Goosen; Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson were 7 under through 16 holes in a 4-and-2 win over Ernie Els and Ryo Ishikawa; and David Toms and Hunter Mahan took advantage of sloppy play by K.T. Kim and Y.E. Yang in a 4-and-3 win.

But it was that last match that brought so much scrutiny ? first with the handshake, then the way Scott and Choi slapped around an American team that had been 6-1 going into the Presidents Cup.

They were the last to tee off, and the second match to finish. That's how big this blowout was.

"K.J. and I didn't get it out of position today, which is a good thing on this golf course," Scott said. "We both played very well. They got out of position a couple of times, and they didn't play their best. Yeah, a good win. Because they were a tough team last time, took a lot of points off us. So it was pleasing to get one up there."

The caddie squabble meant nothing to Scott, who has tried to stay out of the fray, even after Williams disparaged Woods with a racial comment while getting roasted at a caddies award dinner two weeks ago in Shanghai.

Woods didn't make too much of it, either.

"I put my hand out there to shake it, and life goes forward," he said. "There's some great things that Steve and I did, and that's how I look at it. I know he probably looks at it differently than I do, but hey ? life goes forward, and I'm very happy with what we've done in our career together."

Stricker was playing for the first time since Sept. 25 at the Tour Championship because of a neck injury that weakened his left arm. He hooked a tee shot on the par-5 second that kept them from a birdie, though neither of them played well. It was Woods who put them in a bunker on the fifth, and whose tee shot went through the fairway and into an unplayable lie in a bush, both leading to bogeys during a key stretch early in the round when fell 4 down.

The only other match in Presidents Cup history that lasted 12 holes was in Sunday singles in 1996, when David Frost beat Kenny Perry.

Woods and Stricker started their partnership by winning six straight matches, though the last two were big losses ? 6 and 5 against Lee Westwood and Luke Donald at the Ryder Cup last year in Wales, and the 7-and-6 loss to Scott and Choi.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that while the Americans staked themselves to the 4-2 lead, their only loss ? and their weakest team ? was Woods and Stricker. Couples split them up for Friday's fourballs ? Woods with Johnson, Stricker with Kuchar, although that was the plan earlier in the week.

It will be the first time since the 2007 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal that Woods has another partner besides Stricker.

The greater concern for the International team was making up yet another deficit. It led in five matches at some point during the opening session, and the Americans never led in three of the six matches.

The last match might have hurt the worst, with Aaron Baddeley hitting his tee shot into the right rough, leading to a second straight bogey, and Johnson holing a 6-foot par on the 18th to earn a half-point.

"There's no worse feeling than letting down your other 10 team members," Norman said. "Sometimes you feel worse for the player than the player feels for himself. These guys are trying their guts out to put points on the board and they were playing very, very well coming to the end of the day. It's just the way it played out, unfortunately for us."

Norman hopes a change in weather helps with his team's experience at Royal Melbourne. Storms are expected, along with a change in wind, forcing the matches to start Friday morning.
