HBT: Concerns aplenty before today's Game 5s

Four best of five playoff series, four Game 5s. Life is good.

We do it again two more times tonight, with the following action on tap:

Orioles?at Yankees, 5:07 PM ET, TBS: ?It has been an offense-free zone for both teams, but it?s not surprising given the big names and big contracts that the Yankees are catching all the heat right now. Alex Rodriguez has been terrible but, really, Curtis Granderson has been worse. And it leaves Joe Girardi with a tough call tonight: do you play an elimination game without your future Hall of Famer and your 40+ home run center fielder in the lineup? Do you go with Eric Chavez and/or Brett Gardner in an effort to shake things up? ?I doubt he?d make both of those calls, but benching A-Rod would not surprise me at all.

But maybe it?s the Orioles who need to worry more about their offense tonight, as they face CC Sabathia, who shut them down in Game 1. And, while they?re not getting the headlines Rodriguez and Granderson are getting, Matt Wieters and Adam Jones have been godawful too. They?ll need to figure something out if the O?s are going to advance to a meeting against the Tigers in the ALCS.

Cardinals?at Nationals, 8:37 PM ET, TBS: Two things that I sort of don?t believe in in baseball: momentum carrying over and experience carrying the day. ?The Nationals ? thanks to Jayson Werth?s dramatic walkoff homer ? have the former and the Cardinals ? thanks to having the 2011 World Series hardware in their trophy case ? have the latter, but that?s not really gonna matter tonight, as momentum is your next day?s starting pitcher and experience doesn?t put runners on the bases.

For the Cardinals it?s Adam Wainwright, for the Nats its Gio Gonzalez. Each are coming off strong Game 1 performances and each are facing lineups who couldn?t hit water if they fell out of a boat in Game 4. The concern has to be more on the Nationals side, however, because even in victory yesterday the bats were mostly silent, whereas the Cardinals have been doing quite alright otherwise. ?One gets the feeling that this will be a close, low-scoring game, however, decided by the bullpens.

Baltimore Orioles: For baseball's Cinderella, has midnight finally struck?

After losing a heartbreaker Wednesday, the Baltimore Orioles must beat the New York Yankees twice in a row in Yankee Stadium to avoid elimination. But don't count them out yet.

By Ron Scherer,?Staff writer / October 11, 2012

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz leaves the field as New York Yankees' Raul Ibanez (27) heads to home plate after hitting the game-winning home run in the 12th inning in Game 3 of the American League Division Series Wednesday in New York.

For most of the baseball season, the Baltimore Orioles surprised everyone with their resiliency, their ability to win clutch games, and their fearless play.

Now, the Orioles have their backs against the wall.

On Wednesday night, New York Yankee left handed power hitter Raul Iba?ez, pinch hitting for a struggling Alex Rodriguez, hit two home runs. The first tied the game in the ninth inning; the second was a walkoff blast in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Down 2 games to 1 in the best-of-five American League Division Series, the Orioles have to win Thursday in order to play again on Friday night to move on to the American League Championship Series.

Can they pull it off?

?Absolutely, they can,? answers Ed Randall, host of Ed Randall?s Talking Baseball show on New York?s WFAN radio and host of Sirius XM radio?s MLB Home Plate show. ?These guys have been resilient all year there is no reason to think that losing on Wednesday put a dagger in their heart.?

To win tonight, Randall says the Orioles will have beat up on Yankee right-handed starter Phil Hughes (16-13, 4.23 earned-run average). Hughes has been far from consistent this year, with the Yankees not certain whether they will have the dominant pitcher he can be or the one who gives up too many home runs.

On Wednesday, at a press conference, Hughes tried to downplay his inconsistent performance. ?I had kind of an up-and-down season, but you can?t really look at the regular season when it comes to times like this,? he said.

For the Yankees to win, they will have to get the better of left-handed pitcher Joe Saunders (3-3, 3.63 ERA with Orioles). Saunders, who came to the Orioles in late August from the Arizona Diamondbacks, pitched the Orioles into the ALDS by beating the Texas Rangers in the American League Wild Card Game.

?He got stronger as the night went on,? says Randall. ?Throwing a leftie at the Yankees helps neutralize some of those good left-handed hitters.?

The problem for the Orioles will be getting back in their hitting groove. Some of their stars such as Adam Jones (.125 batting average in the ALDS) and Mark Reynolds (.214) have been stymied. ?Chris Davis (.357) is probably the best,? says Randall. So far, in the ALDS the Yankees have outscored the Orioles, 13-6.

However, through the year, both teams have been about equal, evenly splitting their 18 games. Even more importantly, the Orioles have not been intimidated in Yankee Stadium. ?Baltimore has outhit and outpitched the Yankees in New York,? says Randall. ?This is a very even series.?

One of the reasons why the ALDS has been so close is that Yankees star Alex Rodriguez (.083) has been ? in Girardi?s words ? ?scuffling.?

His lack of home runs in recent weeks has been in all the sports tabloids. ?He is the first to admit he has been weak and overmatched,? says Randall.

Despite the slump, Girardi says he will play Rodriguez on Thursday night. But, exactly where in the lineup is undecided. In the first three games, he has hit in the No. 3 spot.

Pinch-hitting for Rodriguez Wednesday surprised almost everyone. ?It gives lie to the theory that Joe Girardi manages completely from his binder" filled with baseball stats, says Randall. ?It is easily the most shocking move he has ever made.?

Girardi in the post-game press conference said his ?gut? told him to make the change.

If Baltimore is able to win on Thursday night, their journey to play in a World Series will get even steeper. On Friday night they would face C.C. Sabathia who beat them in Game 1. Orioles manager Buck Showalter says he will start right-hander Jason Hammel who started Game 1 (no decision).

?You certainly have to think New York would be the favorite,? says Randall. ?But, the Yankees don?t want it to get there because in that game there is no tomorrow? if they lose.

7 advisers resign at embattled Texas cancer agency

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? At least seven scientists resigned in protest this week from Texas' embattled $3 billion cancer-fighting program, claiming the agency created with the backing of the governor and cancer survivor Lance Armstrong is charting a new "politically-driven" path that puts commercial interests before science.

The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas has awarded nearly $700 million in grants since 2009, making Texas home to the nation's biggest pot of cancer-research dollars behind only the federal National Institutes of Health. But how the state agency picks projects has fallen under intensifying scrutiny, beginning in May when its chief scientific officer resigned in protest after it approved ? without scientific review ? a $20 million commercialization project.

Nobel laureate Dr. Phillip Sharp was among those stepping down this week, writing in his resignation letter that the CPRI is making funding decisions that carry a "suspicion of favoritism" in how the state is handing out taxpayer dollars. Dr. Bryan Dynlacht, another reviewer who's leaving, warned that the agency was headed down a path of systematic abuses.

"You may find that it was not worth subverting the entire scientific enterprise ? and my understanding was that the intended goal of CPRIT was to fund the best cancer research in Texas ? on account of this ostensibly new, politically driven, commercialization-based mission," Dynlacht wrote in his letter.

Commercialization projects focus on turning research into drugs or other sellable products rather than funding the research itself.

The letters were obtained by The Associated Press through an open records request. Sharp is professor at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, while Dynlacht is at the New York University School of Medicine, wrote in his resignation letter.

In a statement, CPRIT executive director Bill Gimson called the accusations false and misinformed.

CPRIT was created though an ambitious bond measure approved by Texas voters in 2007. The agency has scientists across the country who help review proposals and choose projects to fund.

In May, chief scientific officer Dr. Alfred Gilman resigned in protest after the CPRIT approved a $20 million grant for a so-called incubator project at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The Nobel laureate told colleagues in heated emails that he was trying to prevent misuse of taxpayer dollars and funding decisions based on political considerations.

It was the largest amount of money the agency ever awarded for a single project. But since it was a commercialization project, it didn't undergo scientific review. The agency has since said the project would undergo such a review.

The latest resignations come on the eve of potentially significant changes in how the agency allocates funding. CPRIT has been steering 75 percent of all funding toward research, 15 percent toward commercialization, and 10 percent toward prevention efforts such as breast cancer screenings.

Those funding formulas could change at the agency's annual conference this month. Gimson has signaled that the time has come to put more money into private commercialization projects, saying that would get new drugs into the hands of patients quicker.

Dr. William Kaelin of Harvard Medical School, who served on CPRIT's scientific review council before he stepped down this week, said in his resignation letter that he recently learned two fellow reviewers who rejected the science behind two proposed commercialization projects were asked by state officials to reconsider their low marks. The letter neither cited the reviewers nor the officials.

"In this environment, I am not confident that scientific quality and rigor will triumph over grandiose promised and hucksterism," Kaelin wrote.

Gimson said the final decision on whether to revise scores still rests with each reviewer.

In his statement, Gimson said he wasn't surprised by the latest resignations given Gilman's departure, though he didn't elaborate. A successor has not yet been named.

IBM Relies on AT&T to Make Secure Cloud Connection

Five Best Practices for Securing Private Clouds

Regardless of how relevant cloud security actually is in terms of making the move to cloud computing, the fact remains that it?s a concern for many organizations.

To help make those organizations more comfortable with cloud computing, IBM this week announced that it has partnered with AT&T to add virtual private networking capabilities to its IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ cloud computing service.

According to Dennis Quan, vice president of IBM SmartCloud Infrastructure, IBM expects to generate over $7 billion in cloud computing revenue by 2015. But that?s not going to happen unless customers have more confidence in cloud security, especially when it comes to creating private clouds, says Quan.

The AT&T alliance, he adds, will go a long way towards providing the ability to federate instances of private clouds across secure wide area connections, but the relationship with AT&T is not necessarily exclusive.

At this juncture, the shift to cloud computing is less about the technology and more about putting the processes in place to manage workloads in the cloud. While security is definitely part of the equation when it comes to employing cloud computing across an enterprise, the real challenge remains how to structure an IT organization to most effectively manage it.
