Photo tips for a sparkling Fourth of July

Heading out with the family for July 4th fireworks celebrations is a time-honored tradition. And, if you're like me, you enjoy capturing those memories in pictures. But photographing fireworks with no camera shake and proper exposure is difficult, unless you know these simple tricks:

1. Use a tripod
When you take picture of fireworks, the camera needs to hold the shutter open long enough to ?see? the fireworks. The longer the shutter is open, the more susceptible your photo is to motion blur. So use a tripod to make sure there?s no movement. For open areas, use a stand-alone model with telescoping legs like the Dolica AX620B100 Proline($38.40). A more mobile option is the Joby GorillaPod($12.30), which can wrap around trees and poles or stand up on the ground.

2. Use the ?fireworks? scene mode
Most point-and-shoot cameras have a button or dial with ?SCN? or ?Scene? on it. Otherwise you?ll find it under the ?menu? button. When you put your camera in scene mode, a list of the available modes will pop up on screen. Select the one that looks like a spray of fireworks and/or says "fireworks."

Most cameras sold today have a "fireworks" mode. Some models I recommend include the GE Smart J1470S (an affordable 14MP camera with a 7x lens, $105.29), Nikon Coolpix AW100 (an extremely rugged 16MP camera, $289.95) and the Canon PowerShot S100 (a 12MP camera with a superfast f/2 lens for great low light photography, $363.95).

3. If your camera doesn?t have a ?fireworks? scene mode, put it in ?landscape? mode

Your camera automatically tries to find an object on which to focus. And when presented with a black featureless sky, the camera doesn?t know what to do. By putting your camera in ?landscape? mode, you?ll be presetting the focus to infinity and narrowing the lens opening, which keeps both near and far objects?in focus.

4. Turn off the flash
Turning your flash off will let the camera?know that it?only has available light to take a picture. This is important?because the camera will then keep the shutter open long enough to capture the fireworks. The flash button is usually a separate button on the back of the camera. On some cameras, you can?t turn off the flash unless you put it in a scene mode or program mode (P).

5. Turn down the ISO
High ISO will crank up the sensitivity of the camera so it can see details in the dark. However, the fireworks themselves are quite bright. So, to avoid overexposure and reduce film noise, take your camera out of Auto ISO and change the setting to ISO 100 or even lower. The ISO setting is usually found under the main menu. You may have to put your camera in program mode to change this setting.

Rangers, Yanks and Giants get 3 All-Star starters

NEW YORK (AP) ? Josh Hamilton is set to lead a Texas parade to the All-Star game. Now, fans will decide if Chipper Jones gets one final appearance or whether it's time for teen sensation Bryce Harper.

Hamilton drew a record total of more than 11 million votes, and the slugger was among seven Rangers chosen Sunday as All-Stars. A trio of San Francisco Giants rallied in the last week to claim spots, while three Yankees also made the starting lineup.

"I don't think the Texas Rangers have to apologize because we've got good players," AL manager Ron Washington of Texas said. "I certainly didn't pick my guys being selfish, I picked them very deserving of being All-Stars, bottom line."

Washington fastballer Stephen Strasburg and Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey were two of the 66 players chosen by fans, managers and big leaguers for the showcase July 10 in Kansas City. So was 20-year-old Angels rookie outfielder Mike Trout, who leads the AL in hitting at .339 and drew more than 800,000 write-in votes.

Few of the races for starting spots were close and there seemed to be little complaining about the fans' choices. OK, sure, David Wright could've gotten the nod over Pablo Sandoval.

But there certainly will be campaigning this week when it comes to Jones and Harper after they were left off ? for now, anyway.

The NL and AL each have one spot left, with fans voting online through Thursday to select one of five candidates in both leagues. Jones and Harper are two of the NL possibilities.

At 40, Jones is a seven-time All-Star and plans to retire after this season. Banged up, the Atlanta third baseman has managed to hit near .300.

"This being my last year, it would be fun to go. I'd love to take my kids," Jones said.

At 19, Harper started the season in Triple-A. The Washington outfielder has dazzled since his promotion with his bat, arm and flat-out hustle.

"I'm an old-timer, so I'd probably lean toward Chipper," NL manager Tony La Russa said on the TBS selection show.

The league that wins the All-Star game gains home-field advantage in the World Series. The NL won last year, then St. Louis became the ninth straight home team to win Game 7 in the Series.

Sandoval was picked for the NL at third base despite missing a month with a broken hand and not matching the stats of Wright.

"I'm surprised I made it," said Sandoval, popular for his "Kung Fu Panda" persona. "He's been having a great year but the fans gave me the votes. I can't thank them enough."

Wright was diplomatic about the result.

"That's the way the system is. I understand how the system works and I respect that system. Pablo's having a very good year. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that I don't get a chance to start, but I'm going to do everything I can to help win that game," he said.

Giants catcher Buster Posey, back from a devastating injury last season, was the NL's top vote-getter and beat out Philadelphia's Carlos Ruiz, the league's leading hitter. Wright and Ruiz made the NL team as reserves.

"This is hard to wrap my head around," Posey said. "I watched all the All-Star games and home run derbies when I was a kid. It's surreal I get to play in one and get to watch the home run derby."

Posey, Sandoval and San Francisco outfielder Melky Cabrera overcame late deficits to win starting spots. Giants ace Matt Cain, who pitched a perfect game in June, made the NL pitching staff.

Texas will have a team-record three starters. Hamilton, who hit four homers in a game earlier this season and leads the majors in RBIs, will be in the outfield with Adrian Beltre at third base and Mike Napoli at catcher. A postseason star last year, Napoli has started only about half the time at that spot this year, but still easily outdistanced Minnesota's Joe Mauer.

"No, it's not awkward, the fans voted for him," Washington said. "He's an All-Star, he's going to go to the All-Star game. Who's to say that Napoli may not be the MVP?"

Second baseman Ian Kinsler, shortstop Elvis Andrus, starter Matt Harrison and reliever Joe Nathan also made the AL roster from Texas. The two-time AL champions began the day with a major league-best 50 wins.

"You look up and down our lineup and we've been in the World Series the last two years in a row, and there's a reason," Hamilton said. "It's not just one player, but multiple players that have got us there."

Derek Jeter became a 13-time All-Star shortstop and will start for the AL with Yankees teammates Robinson Cano at second base and Curtis Granderson in the outfield. Injured New York pitcher CC Sabathia was picked, too, and will attend the festivities but not play.

"It's an honor, especially throughout the years the position I played and all the great shortstops that have been out there," Jeter said.

Prince Fielder of Detroit will start at first base. He was the MVP of last year's All-Star game while playing in the NL for Milwaukee.

"Thrilling, every time," Fielder said.

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp edged Milwaukee's Ryan Braun by 100,000 votes for the third spot in the NL outfield ? Kemp, beaten out by Braun for the NL MVP award last year, is on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring and looks doubtful to play.

Braun leads the NL in home runs. He was the league's top vote-getter last year, but may have been hurt by drug allegations.

Braun or perhaps Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen could wind up starting in Kemp's place.

"I've always been a person that wanted something because I earned it and that's what people wanted," McCutchen said. "It would be awesome to get that, but for me I'd still be feeling like I took someone else's place because someone got hurt."

Dickey, at 37, made his first All-Star team. He leads the majors with 12 wins and could become just the second knuckleballer to start an All-Star game. Dutch Leonard did it in 1943, STATS LLC said.

"It's an honor for every person who's ever helped me along the way and every fan that believed that special things could happen if you apply yourself," Dickey said. "So it's a need to be able to celebrate that with a network of people.

Strasburg is 9-3 with a 2.81 ERA and tops the majors in strikeouts for the NL East-leading Nationals. Last season at this time, he was working his way back to the big leagues while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

"It's going to be a tremendous experience, and it's a huge honor for me. It's amazing to think where I was a year ago, so it's great to see all the hard work has paid off, but it's not done," he said in Atlanta. "It's only the halfway point of the year. We've still got a long ways to go."

The fans, players and managers combined to pick 14 first-time All-Stars in the NL, including somersaulting Cincinnati reliever Aroldis Chapman and San Diego closer Huston Street.

"No way. Really?" Street said.

There were nine first-timers in the AL, including designated hitter Billy Butler from the host Royals. Every team gets at least one All-Star.

The AL starters: Fielder, Cano, Jeter, Beltre, Hamilton, Granderson, Napoli, Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista and Boston DH David Ortiz.

The NL starters: Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto, Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla, shortstop Rafael Furcal and outfielder Carlos Beltran of St. Louis, Kemp, Sandoval, Posey and Cabrera.

The five candidates for the final AL roster spot are all right-handed pitchers: Texas rookie Yu Darvish and fellow starters Jake Peavy of the White Sox and Jason Hammel of Baltimore and relievers Jonathan Broxton of the Royals and Ernesto Frieri of the Angels.

The NL candidates: Jones, Harper, Arizona second baseman Aaron Hill, Atlanta outfielder Michael Bourn and St. Louis third baseman David Freese, MVP of last year's World Series.

Washington said he felt White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski deserved to be on the roster.

"I consider him a winning player," Washington said. "He beats you mentally, he beats you physically, so I feel really bad for Pierzynski."

Said Pierzynski: "If he felt that bad, he would have put me on the team."

"He had an opportunity to do it. He didn't do it," he said.

More than 20 years after coaching in the NFL and more than 10 years after coaching anywhere, coach Ray Perkins has returned to football.

The former Giants and Buccaneers head coach has become the new head coach at Jones County Junior College in Ellsville, Mississippi.? The hire occurred in December 2011.? But the news largely was lost in the shuffle of the final weeks of the NFL regular season.? In a new article published Monday by the Associated Press, the 70-year-old Perkins talks about his new job.

?It fits like a glove,? Perkins said.? ?This is what I?m supposed to be doing.?

He doesn?t care about the low profile of the school.? ?It gives me an opportunity to have a little meaning, to hopefully teach something to these young people and also learn some things from them as well,? Perkins said.? ?These are two or three of the most important years in their life.? The passion I?ve had for football has never wavered, so I really jumped at this chance.?

Perkins will earn roughly $100,000 in 2012 on a year-to-year contract.? Ticket sales and interest in the program have increased, based on Perkins? pedigree.

But his past isn?t something that comes up much with the team.? ?They know how to use Google,? Perkins said.

If/when they do, they?ll see that Perkins coached the Giants from 1979 through 1982, Alabama from 1983 through 1986, and the Buccaneers from 1987 to 1990.? They?ll also see that he once mentored men like Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick, and Romeo Crennel.

So how long does Perkins plan to stick around his new digs?

?How about 20 years? Does that sound good?? Perkins said. ?I don?t have a certain time frame. I really don?t. As long as we can be successful in guiding young people and win a few football games along the way, there?s no reason to stop.?

It?s the right attitude for anyone, at any age.? And we wish Coach Perkins well in his return to the sport that he loves.

Rizzo's first HR lifts Cubs past Astros

CHICAGO (AP) - Anthony Rizzo's arrival in Chicago has generated hype throughout the city. It's also given a last-place team such as the Cubs an encouraging glimpse of the future.

Rizzo hit his first homer in a Cubs uniform Saturday, a two-run, go-ahead shot to spark a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros. He now has two game-winning hits in four games and Chicago is 3-1 since he joined the team.

"It's good to come into a new clubhouse and produce like that and help the team win," said Rizzo, who also made a nice play in the field to cut down a run. "It's a lot of fun when you do that. It's just good to win."

Matt Garza (4-6) struggled but got the victory by working 5 1-3 innings. Five Cubs relievers combined to allow one hit and no runs over the final 3 2-3 innings with Carlos Marmol pitching the ninth for his seventh save in nine chances.

Rizzo has worked to shorten up his swing since spring training and put up impressive numbers at Triple-A. And his homer Saturday - the second of his career after hitting one with the Padres last season - came off a left-hander in J.A. Happ.

"That's another thing I worked on hard this year, hitting lefties and I feel comfortable if it's a lefty or righty," he said.

Said Garza: "He's going a great job producing and doing what he does."

"Let the guy enjoy it," he said. "Let him enjoy his ride."

Happ (6-8) allowed five hits, four walks and three runs in six innings. But the former Northwestern University pitcher is winless in his past 11 road decisions dating to May 3, 2011.

"It's frustrating. It was a walk, a bloop and a blast, then a loss," Happ said. "It's tough taking that, but other than that I felt good out there."

Veteran Astros first baseman Carlos Lee, the subject of trade rumors involving the Los Angeles Dodgers, went 0 for 4. He said after the game he would talk to his wife about whether to accept the move.

"Probably tomorrow I'll let you know," Lee said after the game. "Because I don't want to go through this. Either I'm going or I'm not."

Rizzo's long and high drive to right field scored Starlin Castro for a 3-2 lead. Moments earlier, Castro had hit a two-out RBI single for Chicago's first run.

Garza labored on the 92-degree afternoon but was backed by three double plays and some overly aggressive baserunning by the Astros. He gave up two runs and nine hits in 5 1-3 innings and threw 104 pitches with three walks. Scott Maine relieved him in the sixth and gave up a single to Jason Castro, but Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano made a strong throw to get Chris Johnson trying to make third on the hit.

A leadoff single by J.D. Martinez, a double by Scott Moore and a single by Jordan Schafer gave the Astros a 1-0 lead in the third. But a big inning was averted when Rizzo fielded Jed Lowrie's grounder to first base and made a strong throw to the plate to easily nail Moore.

"That's my go-to place," Rizzo said. "Hitting's going to come and go but fielding's going to be the consistent thing I pride myself on all the time. That's where I go to."

Martinez hit a two-out RBI single in the fourth, right after the Cubs had turned a 5-3 double play with two runners on. But he was caught off second after initially heading for third on Moore's single and was tagged out to end the inning.

"I'm not exactly sure what J.D. was doing. C.J., I don't really mind as much, he was trying to bust his tail to get to third with one out with Soriano, who's known not to have the best arm around, and he was going to his left," Astros manager Brad Mills said. "I'm not exactly sure what happened to J.D. because he was halfway to third and he stopped."

Lowrie saved a run in the fourth with a great stop on Darwin Barney's hard two-out grounder to shortstop, shoveling it backhanded to second baseman Moore for the out.

NOTES: Astros 2B Jose Altuve (right hamstring) ran sprints on Saturday and there is a chance he could play Sunday after missing six straight games. ... Cubs 3B Ian Stewart could be headed for surgery after his injured left wrist has not responded to treatment. .... Cubs RHP Ryan Dempster (DL with a lat injury) is slated to throw a bullpen session Monday in Atlanta. ... Mills said he's hoping RHP Wilton Lopez (right elbow sprain) will be ready to return after the All-Star break. Lopez is scheduled to throw a bullpen session during the team's next stop in Pittsburgh.

Daniel Musto: Being A Bridesman

It's that defining moment in a man's life when his best girlfriend chooses to go against society's rules and asks him to be in her wedding... on HER side of the altar. A few questions briskly crossed my mind when asked to be a bridesman: "With whom am I walking down the aisle?" and "Am I throwing the bachelorette party?" But, as one of the industry's leading wardrobe stylists, the most important question to hit my brainwaves was, "What will I wear?"

Let's face the facts, the female members of the wedding party have always had it easier than the fellas. While the men are all melting under their black and white penguin suits, the girls float leisurely through the day in something strapless and breezy. I was sure to make it my goal to look smart and handsome, while fitting in perfectly with the comforts of the bridal party.

The theme of a wedding revolves entirely around one major factor: the wedding dress. The first step toward putting my look together was to jump head first into the wedding dress search. After flipping through an extensive encyclopedia of bridal magazine tear sheets the bride had compiled, we established a theme: Deconstructed Hollywood Glamour. Think Taylor Swift stars in the re-make of "Gone with the Wind." Tattered edges, frayed bustiers and asymmetrical draping were all a must. "Creme" and "ivory" took precedence over "porcelain" and "eggshell." Finally she found what she was looking for in a boutique stocked with the finest bridal samples: a tattered bustier, a long silk mermaid skirt, and a couple yards of vintage, ribbon-strung rhinestones. With her look finalized, we could conquer the remainder of the wedding territory.

The next stop on the bridesman journey: Bridesmaids dresses. With "charcoal grey" and "deep navy" holding the highest positions on the list of colors, the group shopping trips commenced. Typically, the bridal party would hop from one bridal boutique to another, but not the party belonging to THIS bride. As particular as a Hollywood starlet, she insisted that we find the dresses organically. Covering the lower coast of California by BMW, we flicked through hanger upon hanger, hoping that the winning look would reveal itself. During the entire planning process, the bride-to-be had her eye on a floor-length, sheer, empire waist, charcoal grey number. It had the silhouette of an Oscar gown with the ease of a resort dress. Knowing in my heart-of-hearts that this frock would trump anything else we encountered, I began to imagine what I would wear. With the knowledge that the groomsmen would be in black suits with gingham check shirts and bow ties, I felt it was important to take the casual route; a route that would look sleek, sophisticated and most importantly, comfortable.

With this in mind, I sourced every reasonably-priced grey suit in Los Angeles. Nothing appeared casually smart without looking like a hand-me-down from my father's law school years. Often, grey suits will appear dumpy unless they are heavily structured and purposely formal. I hit a stylist-block when my attempt to look cohesive with the bridesmaids was keeping me from looking sharp, yet effortless.

A few weeks before the big day, in a fit of rage, I turned my closet upside down searching for an answer. Whether it would end up being a piece to incorporate in the final look or simply just inspiration, I knew that I needed to venture within. Flicking through hangers as I did while shopping with the hens, I found the winner! A skinny, charcoal grey, linen suit that I had only worn once the year prior. It found a safe home in the back of my closet because it grew the day I wore it. Linen is a summer fabric and is loosely constructed of cotton. It will often stretch out and grow to be a size larger. But, as the wedding was scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend, the breathable fabric was perfect. Confident that I could make it work, I called my favorite seamstress and stressed the importance of these alterations. I decided to simply alter the jacket and pants to fit like Dior, since Dior wasn't giving me what I needed. Paired with a skinny linen tie in a lighter shade of grey and a textured white shirt, the look was almost complete.

Shoes! What shoes go well with linen that are also appropriate for a wedding? Patent leather is too flashy, while most flat leather looked too casual. After days of sticking my right foot in dress shoes, I found the perfect pair: A charcoal grey leather lace up with laser-cut detail and an asymmetrical toe. I officially had what it took to look the part of a bridesman.

With the suit perfectly altered and safely protected in a garment bag, I flew to New York City to celebrate what this journey was all about. While the other walking-partners were male/female, I walked with one of the groomsmen (we did not hold arms) and looked editorially perfect in between the girls. As I suspected, they ended up in the floor-length grey dresses along with black skinny blazers. Before we knew it, the vows were complete, and the look was a success.

As I ventured into the night, I was pulled aside by a girlfriend of over 10 years. She asked me to be a bridesman in her wedding next year. Let the mayhem commence!
