Using National Parks as Climate Change Education Grounds

News | Energy & Sustainability

National Park Service sees an opportunity to educate the public on climate change by leveraging its rangers' authority and expertise. But progress remains sporadic

Image: zenlight/Flickr

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. ? On any given summer evening about 60 tourists gather in campground amphitheatres here for park ranger presentations. Astronomy, geology, human history, fire ecology are on the regular schedule of program topics. Wilderness safety and Yosemite's notoriously aggressive black bears are also popular.

But one July evening Yosemite ranger Matt Holly popped something different onto his projector screen: "Yosemite's climate: Past?and Future?"

What followed was a rare and relatively new occurrence in Yosemite Valley ? a ranger program focused exclusively on how one of the jewels of America's national parks system is responding to a changing climate.

During the hour-long slide show, Holly summarized the effects of climate change in Yosemite ? including shrinking waterfalls, intensifying wildfires, and vanishing species. He didn't flinch from controversy, presenting evidence for human influence on global temperature and debunking common "natural causes" myths.

"In pretty much every scientific organization, every government ? you're going to be hard pressed to find someone who says climate change isn't happening," Holly told his audience. "There really isn't a whole lot of debate about it."

After the presentation, a few visitors approached Holly with general questions about Yosemite?s trails and wildlife. An older couple, longtime volunteers in the Park, thanked him for inserting a new topic into the nightly rotation.??

Talks like Holly's, while rare today, represent the future for the National Park Service, said agency director Jonathan Jarvis.

Two years ago Jarvis launched a system-wide Climate Change Response Program. Communication, research, adaptation, and mitigation are the four main components. The Park Service has a legion of scientists, biologists, geologists and other experts working on the latter three. But communication and education, Jarvis said, may ultimately prove to be the agency's biggest contributions to the field.

"We host 280 million visitors a year," he said. "The public come to the national parks not necessarily with an intent to learn something. But it is our intent that they learn something."

In national parks across the country, the impacts of climate change are sobering. Scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey report that global warming could eliminate most glaciers from Glacier National Park within 20 years. Warmer temperatures and increased fire frequency over the next century could eliminate the Joshua tree from 90 percent of its current range within Joshua Tree National Park, according to another USGS study. In Yosemite, scientists from the University of California, Berkeley have documented many species, particularly small heat-sensitive mammals such as the American pika, moving to higher ground

Those changes ? some of which are readily apparent to park visitors ? make communication easier, Jarvis said. "We're seeing climate change on the ground now in parks," he said. "That's an opportunity to demonstrate to the public that climate change is happening, in their lifetime, in real time, on the ground in front of them."

The threat to these popular recreation sites also gives the public a reason to care. Stanford University education professor Nicole Ardoin says that national parks have a personal and cultural significance that could inspire visitors to act on problems like climate change. "Talking about a very direct threat to those places brings up something very emotional related to climate change," she said. "It's a great time to reach people, when they're emotionally raw and ready to do something."

SarahGray Lamm ~ Chapel Hill / Carrboro / Durham Real Estate ...

I spent the morning checking on all my listings and replanting For Sale signs in their front yards. Since we managed to dodge the bullet that was Hurricane Irene by mere miles I didn't expect to find any terrible damage to the properties I represent in Chapel Hill, Durham and Carrboro. Other than the expected debris, all were safe and sound.

It isn't always that way. Those of us who have lived our entire lives in North Carolina understand that hurricanes are capricious and preparing for them is not optional. We know that these ?weather events? can strengthen, subside, change direction or fall apart in short order. So we gather deck furniture, secure loose objects, trim loose limbs, and whatever else we can think of to secure our homes from avoidable damage.

As a professional Realtor I have more than just my personal home to worry about. I speak with my clients, particularly if they have not lived here during a previous storm preparation. I drop by each listing and secure my real estate sign in the garage or other area where it cannot become a projectile. I always cringe when I see pictures of a hurricanes' aftermath showing mangled real estate signs embedded in trees or a roof. My signs will never be in those pictures.Real Estate Signs should be removed in a hurricane

This time, we were not in the hurricanes' direct path. I was happy to spend my morning replanting For Sale signs and reporting the lack of damage to sellers who were not here to check their properties themselves. Real estate professionals are not just ?fair weather? friends.

As a meteorologist said on television this morning, science has gotten good at predicting when a hurricane will pass over New York City but still isn't very good at predicting what condition the hurricane will be in when it arrives. That is exactly why we in the hurricane zone prepare for them and why we always will.We were some of the lucky ones this time. Our hearts are with those who weren't so lucky.

UFC 134?s Three Stars: Silva, Nogueira and Silva

With a crowd that was loud and chanting from the very first fight to an exciting slate of fights, the UFC's trip to Rio delivered. But which stars loomed as large as the Christ the Redeemer statue?

No. 1 star -- Anderson Silva: My brother sent me a text message after the Silva KO that said, "Silva is Jordan/Gretzky-esque." As much as it pains me to agree with him, my brother is completely correct. Both Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky were constantly taking your breath away, as they completed feats that seemed super human while making it look easy. Those head feints that come from the core? The effortless striking that still busted up Yushin Okami's face? Rank those with Jordan's fadeaway jumper or Gretzky's slapshot, and appreciate that we get to witness greatness every time Silva steps into the Octagon.

No. 2 star -- Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: The 35-year-old with 40 fights under his belt showed that he still has plenty left in the tank. He started by using a strong chin and good defense as he avoided Schaub's power shots. Then, he landed a few power shots of his own, knocking out a younger, faster Schaub, causing the fans in Rio to go absolutely insane. I doubt the celebration has yet ceased.

No. 3 star -- Erick Silva: Lost among the hubbub of the main card was a beautiful KO by Silva, an up-and-coming star from Nogueira's gym in Rio. He started his UFC career with a 0:40 knockout, and then celebrated with a Matrix-esque backflip off the cage. That kind of striking will make fight fans clamor for what's next.

Who were your Three Stars? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Accused 'underwear bomber' said he worked for al-Qaida

A Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas 2009 told authorities after being led off the plane that he was working for al-Qaida and later offered up details of his "mission, training and radicalization," prosecutors said in court documents filed Friday.

In a 20-page filing seeking a judge's permission to present the statements as evidence at Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's upcoming terrorism trial, the government said Abdulmutallab made incriminating statements to U.S. customs agents after being taken from the plane and to FBI agents a few hours later while being treated for severe burns at a hospital.

Story: Timeline: Umar Abdulmutallab

Abdulmutallab, 24, is accused of trying to blow up Northwest Airlines Flight 253, which had nearly 300 people on board, seven minutes before arrival at Detroit Metropolitan Airport by igniting explosives hidden in his underwear. He is trying to have his statements thrown out because he had not been read his Miranda rights against self-incrimination.

The government contends the U.S. Supreme Court has carved out an exception to Miranda if authorities believe there may be an immediate threat to public safety. A hearing is set for Sept. 14.

Abdulmutallab told U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents about his links to al-Qaida when they met the plane at the gate, the U.S. attorney's office contends. The officers gave the information to FBI agents who met with Abdulmutallab for 50 minutes at the hospital, more than three hours after the plane had landed. The government said there was no coercion.

"Every question was directly related to identifying any other attackers and preventing another potential attack," the U.S. attorney's office wrote. "Defendant answered, providing details of his mission, training and radicalization, including his decision months earlier to become involved in violent jihad."

Abdulmutallab said he "intended to cause Flight 253 to crash, killing all persons on board," the government says.

Jury selection in his trial starts Oct. 4. Abdulmutallab is acting as his own lawyer with help from a Detroit defense attorney.

He has asked to be judged by the Koran rather than U.S. law, court documents show.

A handwritten request by Abdulmutallab asks U.S. District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds to free him from federal prison because he "believes that all Muslims should only be ruled by the law of the Quran."

"The Defendant is being unjustly detained in the United States of America, and subjected to the Rule of Man," the note from Abdulmutallab to the court said.

In a second handwritten filing from Abdulmutallab on Thursday, he claimed that guards at the federal prison in Milan, Michigan used excessive force to restrain him after he "assaulted several officers" on Wednesday.

The filing asks the court to order federal guards not to use excessive force on Abdulmutallab. Court documents do not indicate what led up to the alleged Wednesday incident.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Obesity to worsen, weigh heavily on healthcare costs (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? Obesity is most widespread in Britain and the United States among the world's leading economies and if present trends continue, about half of both men and women in the United States will be obese by 2030, health experts warned on Friday.

Obesity is fast replacing tobacco as the single most important preventable cause of chronic non-communicable diseases, and will add an extra 7.8 million cases of diabetes, 6.8 million cases of heart disease and stroke, and 539,000 cases of cancer in the United States by 2030.

Some 32 percent of men and 35 percent of women are now obese in the United States, according to a research team led by Claire Wang at the Mailman School of Public Health in Columbia University in New York. They published their findings in a special series of four papers on obesity in The Lancet.

In Britain, obesity rates will balloon to between 41-48 percent for men and 35-43 percent for women by 2030 from what is now 26 percent for both sexes, they warned.

"An extra 668,000 cases of diabetes, 461,000 of heart disease and 130,000 cancer cases would result," they wrote.

Due to overeating and insufficient exercise, obesity is now a growing problem everywhere and experts are warning about its ripple effects on health and healthcare spending.

Obesity raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, various cancers, hypertension, high cholesterol, among others.

Because of obesity, the United States can expect to spend an extra 2.6 percent on its overall healthcare bill, or $66 billion per year, while Britain's bill will grow by 2 percent, or 2 billion per year, Wang and colleagues warned.

OBESITY BOMB TICKING EVERYWHERE ELSE TOO

In Japan and China, 1 in 20 women is obese, compared with 1 in 10 in the Netherlands, 1 in 4 in Australia and 7 in 10 in Tonga, according to another paper led by Boyd Swinburn and Gary Sacks of the WHO Collaborating Center for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia.

Worldwide, around 1.5 billion adults are overweight and a further 0.5 billion are obese, with 170 million children classified as overweight or obese. Obesity takes up between 2 to 6 percent of healthcare costs in many countries.

"Increased supply of cheap, tasty, energy-dense food, improved food distribution and marketing, and the strong economic forces driving consumption and growth are the key drivers of the obesity epidemic," Swinburn and Sacks wrote.

The health experts urged governments to lead the fight in reversing the obesity epidemic.

"These include taxes on unhealthy food and drink (such as sugar sweetened beverages) and restrictions on food and beverage TV advertising to children," wrote a team led by Steven Gortmaker at the Harvard School of Public Health, which published the fourth paper in the series.

Five Favorite Films with Michael Clarke Duncan

Best known for his Academy Award-nominated performance in The Green Mile, Michael Clarke Duncan has turned in memorable supporting performances in such hits as Sin City, Armageddon, and Kung Fu Panda (which puts his authoritative baritone to good use). In his latest, Redemption Road, Duncan plays Augy, a Shakespeare-quoting country music fan with a dark past who helps Jefferson (Morgan Simpson), a troubled young bluesman, to settle his late grandfather's estate. In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Duncan shared some of his favorite movies, and talked about his favorite cartoon character, the misconceptions about his size, and his role in one of Major League Baseball's most infamous nights.

RT: What are some of your favorite movies?

Michael Clarke Duncan: I'd have to say The Ten Commandments. Charlton Heston. Heston was unbelievable. Man, for me, to act like that in such a prolific film is unbelievable to see. I can sit and watch that over and over and over and over again. You can't get better than Charlton Heston. He was just unbelievable in that film, that's all. Of course, I do -- and this is going to sound weird - I like Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. I like his movies, like Commando. I love Conan the Barbarian. I love that. I love to watch Armageddon. It's one of my favorite movies. The Green Mile is another favorite movie of mine.

I really don't have favorites; I'm just a fan of movies, period. When I get the chance, I'm at the theaters all the time, trying to check out the latest movies. I'm just a fan of great movies, so I can't really say which five. I'm a fan of all movies.

Speaking of favorites, you play a country music fan who's paired up with a bluesman in Redemption Road. Which do you prefer: blues or country?

You know, it's funny because I can't say I was a hardcore fan of one or the other. They both send the same message to me. They're both about life. One just comes from an African-American perspective, and one comes from a white perspective. But I think at certain times, you have these country songs that make you go, "Oh, I like what he's saying." Then when you hear a blues song, say, a B.B. King song, then it's a similar thing. So I can't say that I like blues better than country, or I like Country better than Blues. They're both good to me. They're both good, and sometimes I listen to both of them.

Duncan with Morgan Simpson in Redemption Road

Chicago is known as a great place for blues. Did you listen to blues growing up?

More so jazz, more so contemporary things like James Brown. So you know, in my neighborhood, you heard James Brown a lot, the Temptations, the Floaters, things of that nature. I came up during that time when music, to me, was really music. It wasn't about talking about a woman and calling them a derogatory name or something like that. It was real music. The old days -- L.T.D., I met Jeffrey Osborne in the airport last week at LAX; man, big fan of his. Singing "Love Ballad," which is one of my favorites, like probably the number one song that I love. So there are a lot of things that I can look back and say had and influence on me as a moviegoer, listening to music in particular.

What initially attracted you to Redemption Road?

Well, you know, it's interesting, the things that may attract you to a movie or a certain project. First of all, it was different. It wasn't a big time action movie, a big budget movie, it wasn't a part where, you know, I'm beating somebody up. It's a guy who has to deal with some truths about himself, and who has to fix something, who has to fix something in order to keep living his life. This thing that's bothering this guy, it's tearing him to pieces, it's something really tragic, and he's trying to make amends. And when you try to make amends with something, you have to find yourself first and you have to be truthful with yourself first. This guy's truthful with himself, and he's coming to help Bailey [Morgan Simpson] to be truthful also. So I have to say Morgan Simpson, who stars as Bailey and also wrote it, and working with the great Mario Van Peebles as a director, really attracted me to this movie, and doing something different in my career. You know, taking a chance on a movie such as this.

You're also a co-producer Redemption Road. Is it a difficult thing when you're working on a project and you've got a bigger role in its production?

No. You know, I had input into everything, but once I was concentrating on building Augy, which is my character, once I was focused on building that, I didn't worry about the other ancillary things on the outside. Mario Van Peebles and Morgan Simpson took care of that, and we had a tone of very good executive producers. Charlie Poe was another one out of Tampa. And once I got into that, I didn't worry about the other things. Every morning Mario Van Peebles would come to my trailer, and we would talk over the production thing or we would go over the script, and he was right on time with everything that he did, as far as the movie was concerned. So I didn't really worry about the production side as much as you might think, because I had so much to study for in developing this character and making this movie to be a really good movie.

Duncan in Redemption Road

There's a running gag in the movie that every time Jefferson loses you, and he loses you a lot, he's always like, "Hey, did you see the big guy? Where's the big guy?" Do you sometimes feel like you're typecast as the big guy, or does being the big guy open certain doors for you?

You know, it's a little bit of both. It's a little bit of both. I think that, when you're a big person, they're going to typecast you. I'll put it like this: Once I did The Green Mile, they'd typecast me as a gentle giant, which, to me, is ridiculous. I mean, it was a role that I played, but you have to get out of that because you don't want everybody going, "Oh, he's just a gentle giant. Those are soft roles." And I don't want nobody thinking I'm a soft actor. So it was thing that, once you get stuck, it's like mud. I broke out of that rut, because I took things that were different. And sometimes it helps you, and sometimes it hurts you, because people see that. The Green Mile was such a great movie, and I can tell you it's great because I really, truly believe that that year, 1999-2000, it was the best movie out, bar none. You know, I will put that movie up against any movie that was out at that time, or any movie, period. But the thing that's happened is people see you as being seven feet tall, 400 pounds, and I'll tell you, if I was seven feet and 400 or 300 pounds, or 250 or 260, I'd probably just be retiring from the NBA with a stellar career, and probably right behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as far as points. I would have had so much money that I'd probably have my own private island, my own grills like George Foreman did, I would have so many things going. But everybody sees me... When they see me -- I'm like 6'4, 6'5 -- they go, "Wow, I thought you were taller." I'm like, "No, I'm not. I'm not taller, I'm not bigger." And I weigh 280 now! Some people saw that John Coffey, when I filmed that movie, I weighed 360. But it's a big difference from 360 to 280. And when people see me, they're like, "Huh? You're smaller..." and I'm like, "Well, what did you think?" They saw a giant. They thought I was bigger than Shaquille O'Neal and heavier and walking around, so when people see me, I guess that's disappointing when that isn't so. It kind of sticks with you, the movie that you do. It was like when I saw Al Pacino, I wanted him to do Scarface, I wanted him to do Tony Montana. I didn't ask him that, but deep down I just wanted him to say a couple lines from that, which was stupid. I would never do that, but I did think it, though. His career, probably, he'll be known as Tony Montana, because he played that role so good. Whenever I look at... people put my name somewhere, they say "From The Green Mile." They never say "From Daredevil" or Armageddon or The Scorpion King, you know, or Sin City, See Spot Run; they never say those movies. They always say "From The Green Mile."

With a small movie like Redemption Road, do you consciously say, "Okay, I like these bit parts in the big movies, but now I gotta switch things up and I'm going to do a little movie like this," or is it that you particularly like a story and decide to go with it?

It's a combination of both things you said. I do say, "Okay, I'm going to switch something up, I want to do something different." But it's also a positive when the story is good. So it's both of those things. Both of those things I look at every time. Like if any movie, you know, just doesn't have the money, but it has a good cast, you could do any movie that has a good cast. It's not paying any money, they're paying everybody the same thing across the board, but the script is good, or you want to work with certain actors, or you want to work with a certain director. I mean, who wouldn't want to work with Mario Van Peebles, and he said, "Hey, we don't have a lot of money, but you're going to be one of the stars of this movie." Of course! You know, if Steven Spielberg did an independent movie, how many people do you think would line up? So, I think it's a combination of both of those things you said. The script and the type of role that you're going for; those two things really come into play. And then the third thing is the director.

Speaking of Daredevil and Sin City, I read that you were a big comic book fan growing up. Is there a superhero you'd want to play if you had the chance?

Oh yeah. I'd want to play Panthro from ThunderCats. I like Panthro. I always have. He was cool, he did the nunchucks. I think I'd have to work on my nunchuck skills; when I was younger, I hit myself on the head with some nunchucks. But Panthro from ThunderCats. I know they're going to do a ThunderCats movie, and they're apparently working on a show right now. I think Panthro would really suit me. I think I could really embellish that role.

I can't see you as Orko anyway.

[laughs] Thanks, brother.

Do you have any idea what's going on with Sin City 2?

I haven't heard anything, but I think they finally get the funding together, and hopefully Robert Rodriguez will give me a call. Right now I am working on a contract with FOX to do 13 episodes of The Finder, which will be coming out January 5th, right after American Idol on FOX. But after that, I probably will, unless they order another nine episodes - you know, 22, fingers crossed - I'll be ready for whatever. I'm ready to act, I'm ready to work. I love working, and I'm sure if they call me, we can work around my schedule or something can happen. But I would love to be in Sin City 2.

Duncan with Colin Farrell in Daredevil

I know this is a little off topic, but I have to ask because I'm a huge baseball fan. I understand you attended the craziest baseball game in the history of the major leagues.

That's right, that's right. Disco Demolition Night, baby.

What on earth was that like? I read about that and I thought, "That sounds like anarchy!"

[laughs] Go on the internet and look it up. They got tons of videos. And it was a thing that... I think it was Steve Dahl or some radio DJ back in the day in the 1970s, he said it was the end of disco, and he was going to blow up all these disco records. So he had this army fatigues stuff on, in a jeep, and he was, like, a commander, and he detonated -- I think the White Sox were playing Detroit at old Comiskey Park - and he detonated these disco records. But when he detonated it, the fires started happening, and all of a sudden, people just started running onto the field. I remember a friend of mine - I can't recall his name -- he just jumped from right field, which was a lot higher than it is now. All we saw was him going to the end and climbing over, and him running onto the field, and we were like, "That is a drop. That's a good drop." And I remember him stopping and just doing his hand like, "Come on!" And the adrenaline took over. We all jumped from that right field corner, and we all just ran up to the field and I remember sliding into second base and thinking it was a lot harder than it looked on TV. By this time, people were setting fires, people were stealing stuff. It looked like a war-torn country. That's what it looked like. And nobody... you had black, white, Mexican, everybody... We were just on the field, and we were doing something that we shouldn't have been doing. Now that I think back, I should have picked up second base and tried to steal that, because everybody was taking stuff, but I didn't though. I went and slid into second and I rounded third, and I was going to do that and go home. I slid into home, and there was a bat laying there. And I picked up the bat. I was there for Disco Demolition Night in 1979, and I think that was one of the most fun times -- every time I look at it on the internet, I just start laughing because I think of all the stuff that we did out there on that field.

Can you find yourself on YouTube? Are you visible in any of the clips?

No, there are too many people out there. [laughs] I look for myself all the time, but there were so many people out there. And the police were called in, and they had billy clubs, and people were running around... you swore it was a prison riot. That's what it looked like: a prison riot on the yard. But once the police came in, by that time, the game was out of control. The second game of the doubleheader didn't get played. The field was destroyed. I remember [White Sox broadcaster] Harry Carrey on the PA saying [does Harry Carrey impression" "Please, everybody! Get off the field! We have a game to play here!" Wasn't nobody thinking about that. Fans ran to the dugout -- we were looking for gloves, balls - people were throwing stuff, running with their shirts off, and just screaming for no apparent reason. I think it was 99 percent men out there -- I didn't see too many women. But it was on Channel 32 in Chicago, they were showing the White Sox game, and boy, did we have stories to tell when we got back. We were just so elated, because we were on the field at the old Comiskey Park! That was our thing. We didn't know it was gonna be history.

After all that, I'm sure you appreciate the irony that you narrated the official 2005 White Sox World Series film.

[laughs] Yeah, you know what? When they called me I said, "Wow, how funny is this?" Now I'm this actor and they want me to do a voiceover, and they don't know I was running around those bases so hard at old Comiskey Park. I mean, from home, to first, to second, to all the way back to home. I just wanted to see what it felt like to run around those bases. So when they called me it was very ironic, but very fun.

Human Body Might Adapt to Radiation Exposure (LiveScience.com)

Doctors who are regularly exposed to X-ray radiation may undergo changes in their cells that protect them from the radiation they encounter, a new study suggests.

These physicians have higher levels of a particular antioxidant called glutathione inside their red blood cells than physicians who don't use X-rays regularly, the study showed. In addition, some of these cells may be better able to self-destruct, which would be protective if they turned cancerous.

However, it's still not clear whether these changes will be beneficial in the long run, or reduce the physicians' cancer risk, said study researcher Dr. Gian Luigi Russo, a senior research scientist at the National Research Council (CNR) in Pisa, Italy. Instead, these alterations might be early indicators of a disease, Russo said.

In the meantime, doctors who frequently work around X-rays should take every precaution to reduce their risk of radiation exposure, the researchers said.

Adaptation to radiation

Interventional cardiologists are doctors who perform minimally invasive operations on the heart, and use X-rays to guide them. While the patients of these procedures receive the highest dose of X-ray exposure, the doctor encounters radiation that scatters off the patient and the walls.

The dose during a single operation is low, but it all adds up, the researchers said. Over a year, an interventional cardiologist may be exposed to the equivalent of 250 chest X-rays.

"After 30 years of work, this corresponds to a lifetime's increased risk of developing cancer of approximately 1 in 100, although there is still some uncertainty in these risk estimates," the researchers said.

Russo and colleagues analyzed blood samples from 10 interventional cardiologists and 10 laboratory hospital workers who were not exposed to radiation as part of their jobs.

On average, the interventional cardiologists were exposed to 4 millisievert (mSv) of ionizing radiation per year, those some exposures were as high as 8 mSv. The average person in the United States is exposed to about 3 mSvs per year from natural sources, according to the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The researchers concluded these doctors may be adapting to their higher radiation exposure based on their levels of molecules called reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS molecules can damage DNA if they get inside cells.

The interventional cardiologists had higher levels of ROS in the plasma surrounding their blood cells than the other doctors, however, inside their red blood cells, both groups had the about the same levels of ROS.

That means that the cardiologists cells were producing more glutathione, and protecting the cardiologists' cells from seeing their ROS levels spike, Russo told MyHealthNewsDaily.

Additional studies

The study is "extremely interesting," and shows the body has a way of changing to limit the negative side effects of radiation, said Dr. Michael Samuels, a radiation oncologist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, who was not involved with the study. "At least on a theoretical basis, this is a mechanism that prevents radiation from harming those cells," Samuels said.

However, additional studies are needed using larger groups of people to determine the long-term effects of this type of radiation exposure, the researchers say. Wearing appropriate shielding material, including lead aprons, and reducing the radiation dose the patient receives during these operations, may let doctors reduce their radiation exposure, Samuels said.

The study is published online today (Aug. 23) in European Heart Journal.

Pass it on: It's possible exposure to chronic low doses of radiation may prompt beneficial adaptations in cells, but more research is needed to confirm this.

(AP) ? Night after night this summer, troops from the Army's historic Old Guard have left their immaculately pressed dress blues, white gloves and shiny black boots at home to slip into Arlington National Cemetery in T-shirts and flip-flops to photograph each and every grave with an iPhone.

The sometimes eerie task to photograph more than 219,000 grave markers and the front of more than 43,000 sets of cremated remains in the columbarium is part of the Army's effort to account for every grave and to update and fully digitize the cemetery's maps. The Old Guard performs its work at night to escape the summer heat and to avoid interrupting funerals.

Last year a scandal over mismanagement at the nation's most hallowed burial ground revealed unmarked and mismarked graves. Congress then mandated that the cemetery account for the graves of the more than 330,000 people interred in the cemetery. Markers may bear more than one name, such as a service member and spouse.

The photos taken at night are matched with other records to find discrepancies that need to be fixed, and officials say it's too early in the process to draw any conclusions. Military officials hope they can eventually use the photos to create an online database for the public. Four million people annually visit the cemetery.

The Old Guard troops typically escort remains and fire three-volley salutes at military funerals. When taking photos, they have middle-of-the-night run-ins with rabbits, foxes and deer in the cemetery, which is situated on the estate where Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee once lived. Using head lamps to light their way, they've tripped in shallow holes and brushed aside countless spider webs. They've paused at seeing freshly dug graves prepared for the next day's funerals.

One soldier, Spc. Raymond Piron, 22, of Detroit, says he was working one night in an old section of the cemetery when he felt something tap him on the shoulder. He turned around, but he was alone.

Before this summer, Spc. Craig Green, 21, of Dover, Del., a broad-shouldered, tough-looking Iraq war veteran, says that when it came to walking cemeteries at night, "you couldn't pay me to do it."

At least one of the soldiers, Sgt. Yvens Saintil, 26, of Philadelphia, who has done two tours in Iraq, says he has friends buried in the cemetery. He has taken time to find their graves and pay respects, even though his duties didn't include photographing their graves.

"At first I was kind of sad a little bit, but it's just part of the mission to continue your mission," Saintil says while standing in the columbarium shortly after sunrise on a recent morning.

The mission is called Task Force Christman, in honor of Pvt. William Henry Christman, an Easton, Pa., native and Civil War soldier who was the first soldier buried at Arlington. The troops executing it are from Delta Company of the 1st Battalion of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, known as the Old Guard ? the Army's official ceremonial unit, which provides escorts to the president and helps put on military funerals.

With an average of 27 funerals conducted daily at the cemetery, leaders from the Old Guard decided to slip about 60 troops in each night and send them home before the cemetery opened at 8 a.m. Initially, the men wore basic Army utility uniforms, but they later switched to comfortable civilian clothes after it was determined the photos were of better quality without the light reflected off the patches on their uniforms.

The troops have walked Section 60, where loved ones commonly leave whiskey bottles and children's art at the graves of those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Section 27, where about 1,500 black soldiers from the Civil War were laid to rest. They've seen monuments small and large ? including one more than 14 feet tall marking President William Howard Taft's grave. They had to sit on each other's shoulders to get a good shot.

They've captured the grave marker of astronauts, combat nurses, Medal of Honor recipients and unnamed infants born to service members.

In the early hours on Wednesday, one of the last nights of their three-month mission, the troops were in Section 15, a relatively flat part of the cemetery where two sons of Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet share a tombstone. They needed to re-shoot the photos in the section because the graves there had been numbered in a way that had made their earlier photos difficult to categorize.

Sometimes, the men worked in silence as one soldier shown a light on a grave while another squatted to photograph it. Other times they chatted about football, or debated the best flavor of Gatorade.

In June 2010, the Army's inspector general released a scathing report on mismanagement at the cemetery, which prompted the Army to immediately bring in new managers and instigate efforts to rectify the problems. Among other things, the IG said it found 117 gravesites marked as occupied on maps but without a headstone or a burial card. Ninety-four gravesites were marked on the maps as unoccupied, but each had a headstone and a burial card. Some gravesites were not reflected on the burial maps.

Criminal investigators have been looking into the burial of eight sets of cremated human remains in a single location, improper burial reservations and possible contract fraud. Just last week, the cemetery said that Army criminal investigators had identified a figure skater in a photograph found in the urn with the multiple remains, meaning it could confirm the identity of the remains and notify the family.

The troops say they take seriously their role in restoring order to the cemetery. They reported to cemetery managers any problems, such as a few graves with duplicative headstones, so the issues could be resolved.

"It's something that's important that needs to be done so that family members can come out here and understand where they need to go to find their loved ones," said Spc. Matthew Caruso, 24, of Staatsburg, N.Y. "It's a good feeling, but it can be pretty stressful and it's a lot of hard work and a lot of walking."

Tiffany 2Q profit soars, raises full-year outlook (AP)

NEW YORK ? Tiffany & Co.'s net income jumped 30 percent in the second quarter, propelled by strong growth across all regions as high-income shoppers continued to be drawn to its jewelry and other goods.

The New York company's results handily beat Wall Street's expectations, and it raised its full-year profit forecast again due to the better-than-expected performance.

Tiffany's stock surged $5.90, or 9.3 percent, to close at $69.01 while the broader markets ended the session up less than 2 percent.

Tiffany, known for its turquoise boxes, has a customer base that leans heavily toward high-income consumers. Such shoppers tend to gravitate toward luxury goods. Spending on luxury items has rebounded faster than other segments since the recession as wealthier consumers feel more confident in making purchases, boosting earnings for companies like Tiffany.

For the period ended July 31, Tiffany earned $90 million, or 69 cents per share. That's up considerably from the $67.7 million, or 53 cents per share, it earned a year earlier.

Excluding 16 cents per share in costs tied to relocating its New York headquarters' employees, adjusted profit totaled 86 cents per share.

This easily beat the 70 cents per share that analysts surveyed by FactSet forecast.

Revenue rose 30 percent to $872.7 million, which was well above the $785.6 million that Wall Street predicted.

Investor relations Vice President Mark Aaron said during a conference call that Tiffany saw a double-digit percentage increase in sales across all jewelry categories.

High-end, engagement and gold jewelry all sold well. Aaron said silver jewelry, which sold well during the recession since it is relatively lower priced, posted a "reasonably good" sales increase.

Rising diamond and precious metal costs have prompted Tiffany to raise some prices. Aaron said the price hikes have occurred in most regions this year and affect various products.

Chief Operating Officer James Fernandez said rough diamond prices have climbed nearly 40 percent in the last year.

"The outlook for diamonds over the long term certainly looks as though rising global demand will continue to put pressure on supply and therefore price," he explained.

Tiffany's best performance in the quarter came in the Asia-Pacific region, where sales surged 55 percent to $173.2 million on strong performances in China and Korea. Sales in Europe rose 32 percent thanks mostly to local customers, but sales to foreign tourists ? particularly those from China and Russia ? increased as well.

Sales in the Americas gained 25 percent. The Americas region ? which is Tiffany's largest ? includes the U.S., Canada and Latin America.

Sales at the company's flagship New York store ? a favorite of foreign tourists ? soared 41 percent, Aaron said.

Even Japan, which is still regaining its footing following an earthquake, tsunami and nuclear scare earlier this year, posted a 21 percent sales increase.

"We are extremely pleased by these results which confirm the growing global appeal of Tiffany's product offerings," Chairman and CEO Michael Kowalski said in a statement.

Revenue at stores open at least a year increased 22 percent. This metric is a key gauge of a retailer's performance because it excludes results from stores recently opened or closed.

Kowalski said the retailer's first-half performance is allowing the company to stay confident about its potential for the rest of the year, even though economic uncertainty remains.

Tiffany is now predicting that its full-year earnings will be between $3.65 and $3.75 per share, compared with a previous forecast of $3.45 to $3.55 per share. The prior guidance had been raised in May from a range of $3.35 to $3.45 per share.

Tiffany's new outlook assumes a high-teens percentage increase in revenue.

Analysts foresee earnings of $3.55 per share.

Is Vocational Education The Right Choice For You?

Since the economic slowdown began in 2008, vocational training has become incredibly popular throughout the U.S. with vocational colleges experiencing an incredible 20% annual increase in enrollment as a result. Vocational schools are clearly an excellent option for many people, but are they right for you? Arriving at this decision requires weighing the benefits and drawbacks of utilizing trade school programs as the vehicle to reach your eventual career goal.

This guide analyzes the advantages and drawbacks associated with trade colleges, and looks at whether or not vocational schooling is the most effective way to enter your desired profession.

The Benefits of Vocational Schools

There were several studies over the last few years on the successes of vocational school graduates in the labor force as compared with their traditionally-educated and trained colleagues. Their findings consistently agreed that vocationally-trained professional people not only earned more than their university-schooled colleagues right after graduating, but continued to at least equal them in both position and salary all through their careers. It should be noted that these conclusions were not relevant to each and every industry, but the general trend did show that vocational school graduates compared very well with their competition in the job market.

This section outlines what the author considers to be the most-important advantages that trade colleges hold over traditional colleges and universities.

Focus on Skills Rather than Academics

Those students who learn easier by working on things than by researching the idea behind them are the ones who usually shine in trade school programs. In vocational training courses, you spend your time actually getting hands-on practice applying the skills that will ultimately be required in your profession ? not reading about how to do things in a textbook.

Start Your Career Sooner

While four-year college students are still in classes completing their degrees, two-year vocational school graduates are already fully immersed in their professions and earning a good paycheck.

Help with Finding a Job

As soon as their students graduate, almost all vocational colleges make a serious effort to quickly put them in jobs. In a 2006 research project, the U.S. Department of Education determined that trade schools? claims about their success at putting graduates in jobs (the majority of trade schools claim a 90% success rate or higher) are not overstated.

In its findings, the department established that approximately 97% of recent vocational school graduates became employed in less than six months of earning their degree or certification, and over 80% of them were employed in their field of study. This rate of success was not just a powerful endorsement for vocational education on the whole, but revealed that it was more effective at placing graduates in relevant jobs than were four-year colleges.

Less Demanding Academic Entrance Requirements

If you are someone who has not traditionally done well in the classroom, or who has not graduated from high school, you?ll find that these challenges will not automatically prevent you from enrolling in a trade college. While the majority of accredited colleges do want applicants to have a high school degree, some will accept relevant job experience, letters of recommendation from managers and the like instead.

The Disadvantages of Vocational Schools

In the same way there are major benefits that vocational schooling holds over conventional colleges, there are also several significant disadvantages. The subsequent disadvantages are generally regarded as the most significant.

Price of Tuition

The more desirable vocational schools are ?for-profit?, and as such place high price tags on their tuitions. By way of example, although the costs do vary considerably from one program to the other, it is not uncommon for the two-year cost at many schools to reach as high as $40,000. The good thing is that there are many financial assistance designated for vocational training students every year in the U.S. ? so much, truth be told, that portions of it often go unused.

Competition for Work

Among the complaints against vocational schools is that they sometimes flood specific fields with too many qualified job applicants, who end up competing against one another and drive salaries down. Regardless of whether or not this situation applies to your field of study, it is something that any future trade school student should think about prior to diving into a vocational training program.

Quality of Instruction

Although in reality it is probably an exception and not the rule, a handful of trade colleges have been accused of hiring teachers whose teaching abilities are not up to par. This view is often influenced by the perception that colleges employ people who are highly touted for their vocational skills, without taking into consideration their abilities as an educator. It merits repeating that this is a generalization that is occasionally made about trade schools, and that fully-accredited institutions are obligated to only employ those educators who are able to meet their state Department of Education?s quality standards.

Overly Specialized Training

For some trade school students, vocational schooling?s concentration on teaching only those proficiencies relevant to their career is a positive, but for others it is seen as a negative. The reasoning behind this viewpoint is that, in the event you eventually decide to change professions and go into a new industry, your vocational education and training will be so focused upon one area that you might be seen as unqualified to do anything else.

Is Vocational School Your Best Choice?

The previously mentioned disadvantages and advantages of vocational training are only some of the factors that you need to consider before enrolling in a trade college. Equally important is researching your individual career objective, and finding out if earning a trade school certificate and degree is viewed as a practical way of gaining entry. What you will find is that employers in certain fields prefer hiring people with trade school degrees, while others opt for university graduates or people who have learned their trade as an apprentice.

Ultimately, trade schools can certainly prepare you for an exciting, lucrative career in a wide variety of industries. It is important to remember, however, that vocational programs are not the only approach, nor always the best means, to reach your goals in every industry.
